G10 Delica

#1

Post by Spydesense »

I recently picked up a NIB G10 Delica off eBay. I have always loved the Delica, but this is just an awesome knife. I know it is discontinued sprint run, but this is gonna have to be a light user...it would just be wrong to leave a great knife like this in the safe and not use at all! I have made up my mind, I'm just curious what you guys would do...to use or not to use?

If it makes your decision any easier, the G-10 Delica wasn't a Sprint Run, just a regular production model that did not sell well enough to stay in the lineup.

I guess that it depends on what the purpose of keeping it in the safe is. Will you keep it for x amount of time and then resale it or keep it in a safe and give it to someone later. If it is in a safe now, will it always be there and do you have other safe queens to keep it company. Its all personal decisions. I have used every knife that I have bought and I have quite few. I have a few that are my SD (Self Defense) knives such as Massad Ayoob and Michael Janich Custom Endure (and upcoming Yo2). I carry one daily but never use it for any cutting chores. I know that it is razor sharp if I ever needed it, so that is as close as I get to not using a knife. - Just find another one and then you can save one and use one. Good luck.

My feeling is when you purchase a knife you must have an intention of it purpose. To either use or not. I personally don't find it just wrong not to use. I think the saying is to each their own. I do know if every :spyder: knife I bought was to be a user I would have 3 instead of 15. just like people don't need to justify why they spend what they do on a knife. I don't think people need to justify what they do with them. So to the OP enjoy your new delica any way you see fit. Even if it were worth a 1000 NIB and only 10 as a user. Its your money and your business.

I always hesitate about using a NIB discontinued Spydercos, especially when I have so many great users in my rotation already. I had this problem with my G10 Endura. I wanted so bad to carry it, but when I saw prices skyrocket on ebay, I thought I should keep it in mint condition. My solution: I looked for a used one on ebay and was fortunate enough to find one at a good price in almost new condition. Now I carry the used G10 Endura and keep my original for display. So if you really like carrying it and the knife fills a need that no other knife you have does, then go ahead a use it. Otherwise, leave it in the box for awhile and keep an eye out for a used one to carry. You might just get lucky.
The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

I put my G10 Delica away after I got my Orange G10 UKPK. They are very similar in form, fit, and function - with the exception of the lock. And I wanted to keep the Delica at my desk where I could use it to open envelopes, etc.

I use my knives and flashlights, even if they are rare or limited runs. I cringe the first couple of scratches or dings but they add character and after having them for years I love the look of them and they grow into old faithful friends. I probably wouldn't buy a Damasacus Delica to use but a G10 Delica for sure. It's all personal preference, once you get some knicks and scratches in them you've ruined the resale value but unless a knife is totally not right for me I don't see myself selling any of them, might as well use them :D

I think maybe I have a different thought process than most, but when i spend 300-400 dollars on a knife I intend to use it at the 300-400 dollar level. My wife bought me a very expensive knife that doesn't do much for me but look good, and I hate myself for not using it, but I just can't. This is how I know I'm not a collector, because it pains me to see that kind of money sit. Instead I know that I'm just a guy that has a lot of knives.

I would use the crap out of it. I think a Delica in G-10 would be a great user.

It probably depends a bit on what you paid for it and if you intend to sell it for profit in the future. Personally I'm of the opinion if I paid 90 bucks or more for a knife I would certainly like to see it used and cared for. But then I'm certainly no collector. I only buy knives that I know I will use at some point and try to refrain from the ones that would only sit in a drawer. Doesn't always work of course ;)

The Delica is a great knife and with the G10 it's probably even more sturdy than the FRN version. Probably up to any task you can imagine not only the light stuff. And should you decide to part with it one day it should still be possible to get a good price for it even used.

My current EDC varies between a g10 Delica 4 Ffg, Opinel number 8 and Scagel Fruitport and has done for several months now. I work outdoors and the Delica gets used in rough, muddy conditions. I think you'd have to do something pretty drastic to make it unsaleable again, for example putting a big chip in the g10. Not an easy task when you look at how the g10 is chamfered off around the edges. If it's any consolation any scratches o the metal can be sanded/buffed out with some fine wet/dry paper and a leather strop. The Delica is screw construction so you can strip and clean it easily too :)

Oops, forgot to mention, I swapped the clip out for one i had sanded back to bare metal (looks a lot better in my opinion). So if you did have resale in mind you could put an old, scratched up one on and pop the new clip in the drawer rather than the knife!
