Spy Dodo & Karambit...very very rare???

#1

Post by 4450marcello »

Hello to everyone, I'd add to my collection a dodo (blue with spyderedge blade) or a karambit ... but these knives are very hard to find here in Italy. Someone asks, but the prices are very high, however, required..... but they are so rare knives and collectable?

Perhaps it is an european speculation on these models? :D

Both knives have been discontinued for a while I believe. And I do think they are pretty rare.

They are very rare there in Australia too.

But if you are very patent and keep searching.
One day if you are lucky and seek very very quietly.
You may come across some in their natural environment. ;)

As others have noted, both have been out of production for a while. The blue Dodos were also production for about three years so while they may not be common, especially outside the USA, they're not really rare. Also, at least from a collector standpoint, SE is considerably less desirable than PE. The Karambit only lasted two years and I suspect it did not sell as well as the Dodo, so it would be less common, although I'd still hesitate to call it rare.

Thanks Paul! are always very kind :) . the collection of spy never ends and every time you always try to add a rare and interesting piece . However here in Italy some models is increasingly difficult to find and eBay has become the only way to use .....

Hi Marcello.

Are you a member of BritishBlades? As a Euro member you would be able to make use of this forum in order to source Spyderco's within the E.U. I have seen Dodo's and Karambits for sale at reasonable prices there, as well as many other models.

I think it would be much easier to find Blue Dodo. I see them quite frequently on e-bay. The last, NIB blue PE was sold for $200, black PE NIB went even for less $158. But I remember times, when Dodo were collecting over $300, with black PE going up to $400. Also not every seller is willing to ship outside US, plus IIRC cost of insured shipping about $35-40. Regarding Karambit, I do not remember, when I saw NIB Karambit for sale last time. I can recall used Karambit for sale on BF about three month ago. I would consider this knife fairly rare.

Actually shipping from the US to Europe is less then $14 uninsured, so it's not that steep.

IIRC, flat rate small box priority is about $12 to Europe, but insurance is not available for this service. Currently, Ebay sellers are responsible for lost goods, so they have to buy insurance, for this reason they cannot use $12 options or they will ship without insurance at their own risk. The least expensive option is Priority Mail International®, starting from @21.25 + insurance. $35 is Global Express Guaranteed

Problem is, Priority Flat Rate is neither insurable or traceable and, even on the Forums that allow sales, things can get ugly if an expensive knife goes missing in transit. Buyer starts wondering if the seller really shipped, seller starts wondering if the buyer really got the item and is now angling to get his money back. Generally leaves a bad taste in both their mouths, often results in yet another US seller that starts putting "CONUS only" or "US buyers only" in their WTS ads.

Granted, the definition of expensive is somewhat personal, but there's a point where most would agree shipping uninsured and without tracking is foolhardy.

That last should be Express Mail International, Roman, and it starts at about $30 with $100 insurance included and additional insurance available. Global Express Guaranteed costs more. To Europe it runs from $45 to over double that, depending on country. AFAIK, Canada is the only place you can ship to via GXG for $35.

200 euro is cheap for a dodo or a karambit if that offer pops up again, go for it

@ Deacon : I guess it also depends on the country that you live in. I have imported over 50 knives from the US and Canada and every single one of them has arrived. I have exported to the US and Canada without a hitch at least a dozen times.

That being said, I have heard bad things about other European countries like Italy for instance.

If I agree to import a knife, I usually pay the shipping costs and assume all risks, luckily nothing bad has happened yet but when you take a look at the differences in prices between Europe and the US I'm more then willing to take those chances. If I had bought every knife I've had for European prices I would have been out probably thousands of dollars (not that's not an exaguration).
