Cricket bites kan be pretti nasti…
Yesterday afternoon, I got a first....hand (pun intended) look at how nasty the innocent looking little cricket can be…
It was a crisp fall afternoon, I had driven my old Kubota G-5200 garden tractor into the old orchard, and picked a fresh McIntosh and Red Delicious apple, the cricket made short work of the McIntosh, so I then started cutting the Red D.
It had slightly firmer flesh, so I had to push the blade a little harder…
…forgetting that my middle finger was on the other side of the apple…
The knife suddenly cut rapidly through the apple, I felt a little "bump" on my middle finger…. Whew, that was a close on.....
Oh crap!
I looked down into a surgically clean 3/4 inch gash, deep enough for me to see past the epidermal layer to the flesh underneath, I marveled at the absolutely clean incision that a scalpel couldn't have performed better, and wondered why there was no bloo.....oh there it is, wow that's a lot of blood…
I immediately put direct pressure on the wound, went into the house, washed and inspected the wound, deep, but not to the bone, the sides were cut cleanly, and should heal with minimal scarring, I had run out if dermabond, so I did the next best thing.
Since the blood flow was stopping (a good ten minutes plus for it to slow to a trickling ooze) I hd the sides of the gash closed and brushed on some super glue, two thin coats, it seemed to hold well, so once the glue had hardened, I put a band aid on to protect the wound and the superglue suture
I'll check the wound daily and if anything looks out of the ordinary or if it looks like it's getting infected, I'll go to my doctor or the hospital
Throughout the entire experience there was almost no pain, the nerve endings are undamaged , and the only real pain is from the actual cut area itself, and that only hurts when pressure is put on it
Now I know how brutally effective a hawkbill/reverse-s blade can be on flesh, and it has given me a new level of respect for the humble Cricket, even more than I already do respect this vicious, yet disarmingly "cute" and innocent blade

Exact same for me, except I was swinging, missed the paper, and cut my left index instead. Ran right down the side, from the middle of the finger to the fingertip. Only thing is... my fingernail stopped growing. Maybe one day...
Anyways, is there any blood on the blade? I noticed I cut myself, then, instantly reached over to check my Endura blade... went to wipe it off... and noticed no blood. The blade looked new. And my finger was bleeding like crazy the whole time. Also, for the cuts, I'm antsy about using superglue, because then you'd seal in everything, and if you didn't glue right, you might end up screwing up the healing process... at least that's what I think. So I use a butterfly bandaid and cover it with gauze.

I've noticed something interesting about the times I've cut myself accidentally. The ones that sting and hurt like crazy, are usually rather minor and superficial. Bad cuts, in my experience at least, never hurt. I'm not sure why that is, but every time I've had a cut that required stitches, it never hurt.

No, there was no blood, and as far as the superglue goes, I decided to remove it, I used it mainly to stop the bleeding, with the glue off, the gash is still a tiny bit open, but the blood vessels have clamped shut on the edges of the cut, so there's nothing beyond a little bit of plasma and platelets in the gash, I put a small dab of neosporin on it, closed it with a butterfly, and rebandaged itMinibear453 wrote:Exact same for me, except I was swinging, missed the paper, and cut my left index instead. I saw no signs of infection or other bad stuff, the super glue did it's job well, so now it's time to let it heal naturally
the edges of the gash were still surgically clean, but a tiny bit redder than when the gash occurred, the initial bloodless gash was so clean that it looked like I was looking at a cut in a slice of white meat, now it looks like a regular deep cut, just a really clean cut, no ragged edges

I believe this is because there are no nerves deeper in your skin where the deep bad cuts go. When you get a shallower cut in the top part of the skin that is where the nerves are which is why you feel more pain. A small cut from not closing my Delica correctly stung quite a bit. But dropping a glass on my toe and getting 5 stitches was relatively painless. I could see something white under the layer of skin where the broken glass cut (it wasn't bone). A lot of it is just perspective I think.StuntDouble wrote:I've noticed something interesting about the times I've cut myself accidentally. Gotta be careful. And yes superglue isnt always best because you do need to give the wound time to breath to heal properly. But in a pinch it gets the job of stitches done, sometimes. A sharp knife is better because as you said it makes a clean cut that will heal properly. I unfortunatly cut myself with a sog flash ii one day, and unfortunatly it was the combo edge. So the plain edge made a nice cut but then the serrations left a not so nice cut. Pretty much cut my thumb down to the bone. I was trying to cut a locking zip tie. I didnt want to saw at it so I figured if I put pressure on it it wiuld eventually break. Was cutting away from me too. Somehow my thumb was in the wrong place because the zip tie snapped and I looked at my thumb and it was bleeding intensely. I didnt feel the knife even cut me. Blood splattered everywhere. But when I saw the bleeding I thought it was small but i stuck my thumb in my mouth and when I took it out i saw the wound. It was pretty bad. It was like you took your thumb and tried peeling off the pad down to the bone. The laceration was so jagged, need serious stitches. The hand surgeon did a good job though.
Gotta be careful with your knives. Of course no matter how careful you are gonna one day cut yourself. I dont carry regular pocket knives with serrations anymore though. Not really useful to me, harder to sharpen, and if I cut myself, I dont want to get another wound like that.

Exactly, if you cut yourself and it doesn't hurt, run like he!! to the medicine cabinet or to where you keep your duct tape.StuntDouble wrote:I've noticed something interesting about the times I've cut myself accidentally. What? No pics??? j/k i was playing with my harpy in my pocket, opening and closing a little ways...........Yeah i know, STUPID. Well the blade closed alright, right on my ring finger. Now imagine trying to get a finger out of a closing knife blade within the confines of a suit pants pocket with one hand. Pain??... oh yes, but little blood. Children, dont try this at home!!!
