frn UKPK

#1

Post by nehctik »

Im looking to get a ukpk, due to knife laws in england. I heard rumours of the gin1 backspring being weak, I was wondering if that was also the case on the bd1 frn model since its a newer upgraded model.

Thanks in advance

Yes it is. It will work just fine but it is not near as strong as my G10 models. In fact, I sent my FRN CTS-BD1 to Spyderco because this one in Black was weaker than my earlier Blue and Gray models. Spyderco sent me a note back with it that it met the specs for this model. I have used it and had no problems but I would prefer a stronger back spring. I understand Spyderco has plans to update these models with a stronger back spring later on. Not sure just when.

I have no issue with my ukpk frn rescue. I don't know if i would want a stronger lock on a light weight.

I have a UKPK with CTS-BD1, and find the spring to be more than adequate. I will get another when the new spring is released, but just to see what the difference is, not because I am unhappy with the spring on my current knife.

The ukpk rocks. I never thought I'd be interested, but now that I have a few I find that I carry one most of the time!

I imagine it will be strong enough.

Here is what I did. I bought the Squeak first. The Squeak has the same spring and a shorter blade, so the spring should seem stronger. With the Squeak I can feel the spring and determine if I think a longer blade with the same spring will work good.

I think it will, but I think the Squeak will tide me over until the stronger spring comes out. :P

I have an frn ctsbd1 ukpk and I love it. I dont feel the spring is to weak. Plus you have a nice finger choil there to stop the blade from closing. Unless you guys mean stronger lock for when its closed. Also the blade has a mid stopping point. When the blade is perpendicular to the handle it stops with some resistance from the lock.

Are the g10 slipits that much harder to open and close?

Keep in mind that initial observations about the strength of the FRN UKPK's spring came from people who owned the G-10 version. While the FRN one's spring isn't as strong, it's not dangerously weak, and the tradeoff is that it's easier to open as well as to close. Personally, the only Spyderco I've ever owned that I would not trust my fingers to is the T-Mag and even it has its devotees.

Got my ukpk today in blue, Razor sharp out of the box, very impressed, I find the spring a little weak when using the thumb ramp but nothing to worry about given the choil.

Suprised though as the blades marked bd1, I thought the coloured frn ukpk's were gin1

Deacon summed it up very well on spring strenghts of the FRN and the G10 UKPKs. My G10 are much stronger than the FRN and that it why a noticed the weaker spring in the FRN models. And like I said earlier I have had no problems with the FRN models as the design keeps the knife from folding. I got a Squeak about a month a go and noticed the stronger spring. The Squeak is another fine knife too.

Of course, compared to other slipjoint knives out there...even the G10 is weak. Swiss army knives have so much tension, both blade open and closed. But thats just fine, because if it was that strong, I wouldn't be able to open it with one hand.

I just aquierd a UKPK. :spyder: So far I like it a lot. The only gripe that I have is that it didn't come nearly as sharp as my other Spyderco's. It was BNIB, so I had assumed that it would be as sharp as everyother Sydy I have ever owned, but it's not the case. That is the only little thing that I found disturbing. Other than that I like the knife a lot. :( :)

Interestingly my Urban has a far stronger spring than my G10 UKPK. I like them both though. It would be super awesome to see some UKPK sprints in g10 with some of the high end steels.
