Refinishing the clip

#1

Post by Tay7118 »

I am working on removing the paint from the clip of my Delica and I was wondering how everyone else does it. I would like it to be as shiney as the blade but the best I can do is a dull finish. I am using a dremel tool with a wire brush and metal polish. How does everyone else refinish their clip? Please post pictures if you can.

Thanks alot,

Hi Scot,

I used 600 sand paper to remove the paint and then polished the clip and the blade with my drilling machine at the highest revs it can give with a polish called "Unipol".
This is used at polishing machining items. If this isn't enough I ask a jeweler. These guys know polishing best.

Thanks icebjorn,

I am going to try to find some of that polish you suggested. Great pics.

But usually it depends on what you have done before on the knife.
You should polish it as much as you can and then give it to them for a real mirror finish.
Camera is a Canon, don't know the english name, here it's called Ixus.
Steel finish, aahh... maybe I can polish this, too???

English name of the camera is "Elph".

I looked around the web via google last night and could not find any place in the US that sells Unipol
Is this a chemical type polish like flitz, or does it have a fine abrasive component to it? I am guessing the latter.

Elph. That fits much better to this nice little machine, but no german would take care about a camera with that name, I think.

Unipol looks like a soap. Think it is a kind of abresive. It's quite hard at room temperature, but when you polish it gets a bit softer, but stays on the rotating element (I don't know the english word?
If someone is interested.
My uncIe, who made handmade medical scissors used this and also the guy that built my trumpet.
If someone is interested for a test I can try to get some. Just give me a mail for details.

I don't think you're going to find Unipol in the United States. However, it looks like it's really nothing but a buffing compound, which is readily available here in different grades. You can get them from larger hardware stores, gunsmithing supply houses like Brownells, or there's a good company that sells all kind metal finishing materials called Caswell Plating. They're on the web at www.caswellplating.com
