Hurricane Irene

#1

Post by Dr. Snubnose »

Come on Irene....I'm waiting and ready for you!!!....Seems like I'm gonna be on the strong side of the hurricane as it passes over Long Island this weekend...And I live down the block from the water, but high enough to be generally safe from washing out to sea...predictions, now at 100 mph winds at landfall, coastal flooding, high waves on the south and north shores as it hits at high tide times, power loss, flash floods, heavy rain, downed power lines and downed trees, flying debris .....I'm not worried I carried so many knives nothing gonna lift me off the ground....LOL...seriously for those in the Hurricane's path be prepared with all things you might need....don't get all panicky....just keep yourself and your loved ones safe and sound....it will be over in a wink of an eye (no pun intended), but could leave a path of destruction behind it for sure....Be safe, Be well, and God Bless all of you on the eastern seaboard.....Doc :D

High tide + moon tide + storm tide is a very bad combo. Be safe folks.

Thanks Paul....We haven't seen one like this one coming for quite a few years now....People been saying we were due, since we had too many blizzards this past winter......God willing by the time it reaches us some it's strength will be weakened, but as you say the things you mentioned in combo is not good at all.
I have been busy in my Kung Fu Center preparing for all types of damage, roof leaks, window breakage etc etc etc....Still I can't believe how stupid some people can be...Two businesses in my complex plan to be open throughout the storm...a Tavern and a Deli....The tavern owner is out looking for a generator...and the Deli....I don't know what to tell you....sure the economy here NY has been bad, but is the money loss worth risking your life for?....I told these owners they were out of their minds but they expect business as usual and don't want to miss a day of pay.....Me I'm closing down and plan to be with my family....I don't care if my whole business blows away in Hurricane force winds and come Monday if nothing is left...as long as I'm with family and they are safe and sound..that is all I care about....Thanks for the good wishes....and concern...people here are being stubborn and stupid, we are New Yorkers...and that means you can't tell us nothing, they are for the most part down playing the possibilities and joking about it.....some are even throwing Hurricane Parties.....This is a real threat, and people should be more concerned....They are busy buying gas for their cars like you wouldn't believe...like there is really an evacuation plan for the Island that might work  After 12 pm today all airports, tunnels and bridges, ferry, and Mass Transit will come to a complete halt, The Army Corp of Engineers now says if NYC takes a direct hit, even with a category 1 hit, the Subways could fill with at least 5 1/2 feet of water as would all the tunnels leading out of the city....people here are buying Milk and Eggs like everyone is going to have French Toast while all of this is going on.....Silly Silly People!......Doc

PS:Officials here on LI are already saying, if this is as bad as it could be, we might be looking at 4+ days without electrical power or longer...So If you don't see me posting here after tonight...and for several days thereafter...you'll know what happened....I'm not one to go into panic mode for anything, cause when you do the brain just stops working and normal thought processes go out the window....but this one is even scaring me...Don't worry about me..I'll be eating stale french toast....Doc

Hold onto your hat Doc. Let's hope you don't lose power and can continue to post as usual. . Originally being from the east coast I've seen my fair share of hurricanes, but this one is certainly getting a lot of media coverage.

Earthquakes, now huricanes. You guys are getting it this week. Best of luck. Tie stuff down, you know the drill. I live on the panhandle of FL so I understand huricane preparation and survival. Worst one for me was Opal several years ago. About 10 days with no electricity. What was strange was after a couple of days no electricity we had adapted and life was still pretty good. Keeping ice in the cooler was the most consistant issue but FEMA helped with that. We have a generator now so we can keep the frig. running. Oh yeah, the Spyderco forum stays running also. :D

My Dad lives in VA. I wish the best for him and all of you who will be effected.

I know, I know we had "Hugo" and "Andrew" but they weren't even a whirlwind compared to KATRINA :D

Maybe we ought to start naming some of these newer huricanes after former first ladys>> Huricane Hilary!!!   Got a ring to it don't you think :D

I remember when all huricanes were named after women. Then someone complained. I don't think it was a man. :) So, now men get credit for bad weather also. About time we get included. :D

Good luck and best wishes to you, Doc! And, good luck and best wishes to all of you along the East Coast that Hurricane Irene has, and plans to, visit.

I'm roughly a few miles northwest of the Washington, DC, area. After seven years of being assigned to installations in the Philippines and Okinawa (especially Okinawa), I do know the drill and have taken all steps that I can in preparation. Power outage is a given and I'm ready for that. We'll see how the public water works hold up, and I'm ready for that as well. Hopefully the apartment windows hold up.

The Pizza Hut guy just came by and I tipped him well for coming out in the rain and wind. Going to pop open another Coors Original, have another shot of Crown Royal, watch the news for as long as the power holds out, and see what Irene brings.

Again, all of you out there along the East Coast stay safe! See y'all around the Spyderco Forum!

I'm guessing the coastal areas of Long Island are taking a pretty good beating since Irene seems to be hitting at max strength right around high tide. That will maximize flooding and storm surge damage to boats, marinas, and beach front properties and there are a lot of those on Long Island. Hope Doc, and everyone else in Irene's path, makes it through with minimal damage.

Thanks for the good thoughts guys, All is well on the Eastern Front!. Hurricane Irene picked up speed before slamming the coastal areas on the South Shore of Long Island. There wasn’t a tremendous amount of rain as predicted, but high tides and a strong surge of water cause some major flooding in low lying areas….The winds were the real problem 60-75 mph winds sustained for over four hours during the storm…We were on the east side of the eye with the storm traveling 25 mph caused sustained winds of around 90-100mph with gusts near 110. Lots of people lost power of course with the down lines and trees….The trees took most of the punch from Irene, you can’t walk 500 feet without seeing a large tree down, and that’s just the ten miles away from my home that I ventured out from today. I live in a waterfront village and we saw the tide rise above the boardwalks and travel across a 1000 foot parking lot, fill the main road with water and then enter the village for about another 200 feet. I live about 1,500 feet from where that happened uphill….So I guess there was a strong storm surge of water. Some parts of the Island were hit a bit heavier but I’m happy to say in Suffolk County there was not a single fatality, Nassau County had one a 55 year old surfer riding the waves during the storm at night no less…(Idiot!!!! Moron!!!! and at 55 should have known a little better and now is dead)….Correction, one Suffolk County Moron died Wind Surfing....What is wrong with these people.....We have half of our power, Lights and some electrical sockets working, the frig, stove, microwave, air conditioning are down…but I have extension cords running from those items I need to a power source so we didn’t lose our food in the frig and aren’t really in a bad way…Just wanted to let you know we are OK ……Doc

Funny part of the story...7 hours before the storm posed to start, the wife calls me at work and says I found your emergency radio (which I haven't used in years) and it doesn't work, you need two c cell batteries...so pick them up...I then spend about 4 hours going from store, to supermarket, to more stores looking for Two C cell size batteries.....Not a single C or D cell battery to be found anywhere...I'm even in toys store and electronic stores looking to buy anything that has two c cell size batteries included...at this point I'm willing to spend like $100 for anything that has two c-cell batteries....Guess what I couldn't find them at ALL!.....I get home pick up the radio....it doesn't take two c cell batteries it takes 6 AA batteries....which I just happened to have about 100 of them in the draw.....So much for freaking out....I was thinking I should pick up some c cell batteries this week( Which I don't need for anything) , just so the wife can see that they won't fit in those tiny holes.....LOL......Doc :)

Glad to hear you made it through ok Doc, hope the rest of our members along the East Coast fared as well. Grew up and spent a good part of my life on Long Island less than a mile from Long Island Sound. Got to see the damage Diane, Carol, Donna, Agnes, Gloria and a few others did. Hope LIPA is better than LILCO ever was at getting the power restored.
