fake spin etch

I bought this from the same seller. Its a cheap chinese knock off that wasnt even sharp.

It felt like it was made out of paperclip steel. The "spyder" symbol on the blade had a spot in the middle where the etching was bad. I believe it should have been laser etched not chemical. The blade was also full of rough machining marks.

The box was a give away too. It was missing the sticker that has the upc and model number. The spyderco name and spyder symbol are missing the little trade mark symbols.

I've informed the seller that its fake and his reply was that he bought them as the real product.

If that's a fake (and I'm not saying it's not one) it's a frighteningly good one.

It would also be the first fake Spin I've seen. My grey-box Spydies don't have noticeable trademark symbols and the Spyder-logo appears chemically etched on some of my Japan-made knives as well. The machining marks shouldn't be there, but aren't unheard of. As for the "paperclip" steel, the Spin is designed to be as thin as possible, so it isn't nearly as robust as the thicker steel handled knives Spyderco has put out.

If it is real (which I tend to think it is), it's kind of sad that the quality on the one you got is on par with Chinese knock-offs.

FWIW, just checked mine.

Box is labeled, but otherwise looks identical to the one in the auction. No registered trademark symbols are visible. Spyderco has been known to send unlabeled boxes out to dealers as replacements, so the lack of one is not definite proof of anything.

Only difference I can spot is that mine, like the catalog illustration, has a decidedly squared off "kick" behind the sharpening choil/spanish notcth while the one in the auction has a decidedly rounded looking one. Problem there is that the angle of the knife, lighting, and a bit of oil on the blade can make things look different than they would in person. Still it's the closest thing to evidence of difference that I can find.

Rest, if fake, is frighteningly good. Everything appears to be the correct size and in the correct place. I can even match up portions of the etch pattern.

Bug on mine is laser etched, with a visible pattern of parallel horizontal lines. Since it's an early CC numbered one, I'm inclined to doubt there would have been earlier ones which used a different engraving method, or that they'd have changed back to an older method on later production. Mine is perfect, but I have other Spydercos where the laser engraved bug is not. I really can't tell how the one in the auction is engraved, so again, no hard evidence. Mine is also positioned a bit differently, more of it is hidden when the knife is closed.

I realize wingman was talking about his knife, but I'm not seeing anything I'd call rough machining marks on the blade of the one in the auction, just the usual vertical striation pattern you see on VG-10 and what appears to be some oil on the tang.

So, no conclusive evidence of it being a fake. Some photos of wingman's knife might help.

Maybe the best test is testing edge retention vs a knife you know IS VG-10 and a knife made out of 420j2 or 440A

Wow! Not sure how I could have missed it, but can't recall seeing that thread before. Given that, the one being auctioned could very well be a fake. Whoever counterfeited them did a way above average job of it.

The quality just wasn't the same as my para2 and tenacious. The pivot bolt was loose and the blade had a lot of play. I checked the etch pattern and it looks more similar to the etch in the fake thread.

I've sent it back and an awaiting my refund.

Here are some pics.

As noted by others,, that is probably the best fake that's been discovered. There was obviously some siginificant amount of work put in to getting all those details that close to real. Those details mean some work put into production of the fake. You gotta wonder how much money they could be making on that fake...probably more trouble than it was worth even to the counterfeiters...

I saw that one and discounted it simply for the overcharge on shipping, never figured it for a fake. I saw another seller that had some that went cheap and missed out, maybe those are the same fakes. Seller does not have any more listed currently. Glad your getting your money back.

The seller gave me no problems. The monent he received the knife I got my refund. He even refunded me the differance in shipping costs.

So I used the monies to buy a pink native for the wife and a zdp dragonfly 2.

That it the SpyFox, I had one and it was a nice blade but small, about the size of a Kopa

here is a thread about it: http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... ght=spyfox
