Just another option. :D
hehe I used to do that when travelling but I wouldn't "borrow" a steak knife. Any dollar store has paring knives and emery board fingernail files. I'd buy a cheap paring knife, make a sheath of cardboard and surgical tape and sharpen it with the emery board. voila, instant EDC, and you can pitch it in a rubbish bin or dumpster or drop it down a sewer before you leave.

I wish i had known about that when I was lived there :D the place where I adopted my cat was on Devon..I could have picked up a spydie and paid Felines Inc. a visit to play with the cats :D

I can't remember the name of a little gun shop i visited in a little strip mall in Joliet when I was waiting to pick up my TWIC card for work. It had a pretty decent selection of spydies for decent brick and mortar prices. I walked out with a PE SS E4.

I'm trying to avoid driving to the burbs or Wisconsin. There's at least one REI downtown but I think they stopped carrying Spyderco. I'd be ok with picking up an SAK or Leatherman. But I'm also using this as an excuse to pick up a new Spyder model I haven't owned yet. I could buy a cheap SAK and gift it to my cousin but I don't mind checking bags going home.

Greetings from Chicago!

I just got back from a work trip to Lake Tahoe. Given that it's legal there, I carried my beloved Caly 3 like it was going out of style.

It is unlikely you'd get into trouble with "discreet" carry of a >2.5 inch blade, but I could never endorse violating the letter of the law. That said...

I voted for the PE leaf-blade UKPK. It has a great general-purpose blade shape and a marvelous slip joint that may even cause you to rethink the need for locks at all. It's no coincidence that its blade is highly reminiscent of the Caly 3's.

I personally feel more at ease complying with the (stupid and highly irritating) length limit. Within these parameters, my EDC is a Lava. One of these days I'll get myself an FRN Dragonfly for its slightly longer blade and more versatile shape.

Enjoy your stay.

there are alot of suburbs between Chicago and WI. Shore is literally right outside of the city. If you are up on the northside it isnt that far of a drive. Call ahead, i think they close early.

If you don't have a UKPK, then a good excuse to get one. I really like mine.

I second the cheapy hardware store idea. And if not that, I WOULD buy the chicago, or a similarly legal knife. No one plans to run into the cops. It could potentially save you a lot of cash and headaches. Is an extra inch or so in blade length really worth it?
