Any news on Gayle Bradley's new design?

#1

Post by Mako109 »

In a video posted a while back (IIRC from ShotShow 2011) Gayle Bradley flashed a new design in the works, but it didn't have a name yet. I believe it was a lighter, slimmer gentlemen's knife. Beautiful looking piece judging by the brief video appearance.

Any news on the development of this model? Does it have a name yet?

I too liked that knife and vaguely remember a post saying that with the popularity of the current Gayle Bradley it would probably be awhile for the "Gayle Bradley 2" to be released.

Both of you are right. There are two new ones, one being the Air, which is the smaller gentleman's knife, and the Gayle Bradley 2, which sort of looks like a smaller version of the current Bradley design.

That^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
looks very similar to the current GB. I'd imagine it's the next iteration.

Chuck:

Thanks for the picture. I don't know the name of the version you in the picture, but if it shaves a few ounces of weight off while still keeping the same general lines as the current GB (oh, , and the M4 steel as well) then I'm all in.

Chuck - great photo. OK we're on the right track. In that same video Mr. Bradley also held a smaller one I believe. Can you verify? So I believe there are actually 2 new designs in the works.

Vid from a Bladeforums post:

I'm not a huge fan of Wharncliffe blades, but that looks to be a sweet little folder that may change my opinion on that.

No problem SQSAR, I also like that there's a bit more flare on the handle that may act as a guard.

that new gayle bradley (2?) larger model looks quite nice because it has added the stop ramp so your fingers don't slide onto the blade. one thing though is that it has lost a bit of it's curvy design and is more "straight"

1623 - Yup that's the vid. So two new Gayle Bradleys are in the works.

1) A yet to be named prototype based on the orginal GB design. So I'll just call it the GB II. Loving the looks of this one.

2) The "Air", a smaller gent's knife weighing 1.3oz.

I wonder if we will see them 4QT 2011, or 1st QT 2012, or maybe later? In any case, hope they're are manufactured in Taiwan like the original GB. The Taiwanese makers did a beautiful job.

The GB II looks really great I do hope that it is going to be M4 as well. In fact if it is anything lesser...I will probably not bother with it.

The air...Hmm, not loving it at first sight. Especially with the Chapparel (sp? I always mess it up) and a few other small "gentleman's" knives already here. But depending on the final steel type etc I might go for it.

That GB2 sure could use a compression lock. It's meant to ne a hard use knife with a hard use blade steel so why not a hard use lock instead of a liner lock. The GB was the first linerlock I bought in years and it was also the last. Unfortunately my dislike of linerlocks leaves the poor guy sitting on the table and never makes it into my pocket.

Held both prototypes in Amsterdam. That Air was indeed a small warncliffe (for as far as its form was definitive) and that larger 'Bradmax' version was slightly larger, more elegant design than the first original GB.
Again, both knives were proto's and in development. I remember Sal even had to decide what steel would be used and if they would even make it to production. I'd say; a little patience (and that is hard for me as well ;) )

While it might technically be a liner lock, the heavy construction and thickness of the liners make it much more like a frame lock. And you should never worry about the strength of the GB. I would go so far as to say that unless you are doing something highly stupid, it will never fail.

Three probable new models? GB2, Air, and a little patience? Awesome! :D

Both are nice, and will probably buy both.
But the Spyderco line up is so broad these days, am not sure it will fill any niche in their line up. Would much prefer a thin 4" GB folder.
But that's just me and not the masses,
Held both and talked with Mr Bradley at blade for almost an hour.
My take was just a solid down to earth guy, with a passion for knifes.
Nothing wrong with that. Oh, and an eye for great designs.
And a true master craftsman.
Not all that common these day's.......... ;)
