impala // military

#1

Post by kith »

i am thinking about getting either an impala w/o guthook or a military. (already own a native II (YAY!) and now am looking for someting slightly bigger with a really tough steel - in terms of edge holding). what i wonder about is which blade shape will be more versatile? somehow to me it looks like the tip of the impala will be more solid than the military's, is that true? is there a _significant_ (by significant i mean annoyingly noticeable) difference in terms of edge retension between CPM440V and VG-10? does the huge handles of both knives make it hard to handle them (i've got rather girlish hands *blush*)?

geez its so hard to decide between those two... dont you guys tell me to get both (if i had the dough i wouldnt post on here in the first place ).

ps. i hope you dont mind my poor english since it isnt my native language.

Get the military.Even with its large size it is easy to handle, hardly know it is in your pocket. As long as you keep it sharp it is easy to sharpen ie. don't let it get to dull between sharpenings. The edge holding of the 440V is outstanding.

If I were you, I'd get one of the new SS Police models with VG-10 steel.

Kith,

Welcome aboard! Both are great knives but you're going to need to go with what fits you and your needs. The Millie has a thicker blade with more belly and performs a wide variety of tasks with ease and the Impala is blessed with VG-10 and is slightly smaller in the handle. You may be able to get yer mitts around the C07 Police a liitle better and still have the larger working blade. She's available in SS and CF and you may still be able to pick up one in G-10 through glasshart or on E-Bay.

Another option would be the C48 Wegner. The G-10 handle is a bit smaller than the Millie and the ATS-34 blade retains the same basic shape of the Impala with similar splines at the thumb rest. The Wegner has an SS liner and is tip down carry. They are discontinued but I believe John F. Jensen may still have them on his web site.

Whatever you opt for, be sure and give Linda a holler (glasshartt@aol.net). You may find you can afford both.

Howdy Kith! Welcome to Land!

As to the better of the steels, it's a personal preference. You can have great edgeholding with 440V, but you trade off impact resistance (It'll roll over if you hit a staple in a box, for example.) . It also is tough to sharpen when it gets really dull, unless you have the right tools.

With VG-10, there is excellent edgeholding, though not quite as good. It'll still whip your Native's AUS-10. Impact resistance is better, and it is easier to sharpen.

There's your choice. Do you want insane edgeholding? Buy 440V, but be ready for rolled edges and tough sharpening. Do you want ease of sharpening? Buy VG-10, and accept a minor decrease in edgeholding.

Never underestimate the impossible.

Kith Welcome to the forum. I second java's thoughts, particularly about the C48 Wegner. If you have smaller hands - as ye have alluded to - like me, you may want to go with the Police, a knife whith which I have only been recently aquainted, and which has moved right to the top for how it feels to hold and use. And I like the VG-10 blade steel over the CPV 440V - the 440V is a ***** to sharpen.
I would say that depending on your use, either the wegner or the Police. BTW, I have used (liked, loved, raved about) a Military for about 4 years, so I will tell you that having another knife come to the fore is quite an accomplishment.

Ummm.... The email address for Linda is actually GlassHartt@aol.com

thanks for the prompt answer guys. i didnt consider the police an option because its got a backlock (want something different this time). and i actually am not very keen on false edges on the back of a blade (its my only complain about my native, i'm really being picky here aint i?!) as for the false edge on the impala it somehow looks appropriate. to be honest i've got a bad crush on the impala and will probably go for it. will have to check at the local knife store whether i can handle its size to my satisfaction. 440V rolling over by hitting a staple in a cardboard makes me think VG-10 will probably be the better choice for me, i really didnt think 440V was that tough. the idea was to perhaps get a military, get it sharp once and never ever resharpen it again (since i wouldnt ever have to abuse it i thought it might be possible) but i figured that it probably wont work out as planned .

anyways, thanks again for your help guys
