Is the ATR Spyderco's new flagship model?

#1

Post by shootist16 »

I asked this before and got mixed responses, with many stating the Military will remain Spyderco's flagship. With the ATR being an in house design, with state of the art features and high tech materials, will it be the new flagship model?

The ATR does look like an excellent folder, perhaps Spydercos' best, but I STILL think of the Police model as the Spydie "flagship" model, since both the Endura and Delica are pretty much smaller versions of the Police model.

The ATR will be far too expensive to become the representative knife of Spyderco.

IMHO, that is why the Endura/Delica knives are so well received, inexpensive, high-performance for the majority of users.

Even then, the Endura is almost twice the price of a Buck 110 - which is many people's definition of a high quality lockback.

IMHO, although the ATR is a really cool <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>....NOTHING can take the place of the Military!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

The definition of flagship is:

Main Entry: flag·ship
Pronunciation: 'flag-"ship
Function: noun
Date: 1672
1 : the ship that carries the commander of a fleet or subdivision of a fleet and flies his flag
2 : the finest, largest, or most important one of a series, network, or chain

I don't believe that price should have aything to do with whether or not a product is the flagship. If price were a factor the Corolla would be Toyota's flagship instead of the Avalon. It could be argued that the Endura could be the most important since it has been a staple of Spyderco.

Well by that definition, the Civilian is the flagship, with the Police in a close second.

then my question is... if the civilian is the flagship then why doesn't <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>co post a picture of it? or the matriarch for that matter on their online catalogue??? i found that to be rather odd. take care

In the automotive world, the "flagship" would be the most expensive, most difficult to build model. The Dode "Viper" to many is the flagship of the Dodge line. On the other hand, many consider the most popular model to be the flagship, such as the Toyota "Camry" or the Honda "Accord".

We've kinda thought of the Military as the flagship because of the good ergonomics and advanced design.

If advanced design and build are to determine the "flagship", then the ATR would be it.

The ATR advanced features include;

1. The blade shape and grind offer very good blade and tip strength due to the double hollow or "dagger" grind.

2. CPM-S30V which is proving in the lab to exceed almost all other steels in edge retention.

3. The Cobra Hood which permits more control, ease of opening and a secure thumb rest in the open position.

4. The 6AL4V Titanium handle with an integral compression lock on a blade almost 4" long rivals the Sebenza in required accuracy for mfg build quality.

5. The Integral compresion lock boasts MBC lock strength. Almost twice that of titan framelock folders.

6. The simplicity and very few number of parts.

7. The ergos are very good.

8. USA made has its own value.

OTOH, it is expensive.

Is there a time frame for the availability of the ATR. I would like to work the purchase into my spydie acquisition plan, if you get my meaning, <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.

I just heard May. The design is complete and some of the tooling takes a longer time (casting molds for the Cobra hood).

For some unexplainable reason, the ATR doesn't hit my spot. I totally agree that it's very good, ergonomical, well made and everything, yet I wouldn't replace my Delica with an ATR ... <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

When I first saw pictures of the proto last year I have to admit that it didn't light my fire.

Since then I have had chance to buy and extensively use the Ti-Salsa. Now I can't wait for the ATR with it's similar features. OK, it might look ugly as ****, but if it works half as good as the Ti-Salsa then it'll be a winner.

One of the first things I learned about Spyderco is not to go by looks. Don't get me wrong, they have made some beautiful knives. Spyderco seems to believe that form follows function. The beauty of Spyderco is in handling and using them.

I have been looking foward to the ATR since I saw it two Blade shows ago.

I have an ATR now, and can say thaty in my opinion it is the flagship. It incorporates many features proprietary to Spyderco. The cobra hood, Spyderco round hole, integral compression lock. The fit and finish are incredible. The knife says a lot about Spyderco's ability to make good things happen. In my mind it shows off what Spyderco can be.
