Small Spyderco

#1

Post by WVDAVE »

I carry large folders usually like the Police3, Military, Chinook and the J.D. Smith. I'm now looking for a small folder what I'm considering is the Squeak, Dragonfly2, Chicago, and the Cat. What's your thoughts on these? Am I missing something?

Thanks,

If I were you I'd wait for the soon to be forthcoming Techno. It will have a 2.5 inch blade of CTS-XHP steel and titanium scales. It's a frame lock. IIRC, I think it will be out sometime early next year.

I like the DragonFly2. It cuts like a much bigger knife and it is light enough that you can wear it with your Sunday Best...

Questions seem to be:
locking or non-locking?
Frame lock or back lock?
Choil or no choil?
Steel type and level of fit/finish (expense)

Also consider:
Kiwi
Balance
Spin (disco'd but still found inexpensively)
Urban
New dyad sprint

The only one I have is a dragonfly - love it!

The Chaparral should be out soon, and looks to be a really sweet little :spyder: .

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

Out of the ones you chose I would say the Dragonfly. You should also consider the Ambitious. It's pretty tough for it's size.

Dragonfly. This is an amazing knife! I have too many knives to count and this includes about 50 Spydies but the Dragonfly is always carried. This knife cuts way out of proportion for it's size. I have heard the comment that Spyderco make and excels at great small knives and this is very very true.

The Cat and Chicago... I avoid liner locks if I can.

The Chaparrel... I have a bit of Sage/Native fatigue going on.

So, in my book you have the Dragonfly 2 and the Squeak. I am interested in the Squeak, however I am not restricted by the blade length of the UKPK, and you can pick one of those up for a lot less. I will get one at some point in the next month or so however (Squeak).

I would give the nod to the Dragonfly 2. You have several handle choices (material) and blade steels.

If you want to go smaller, I recommend the Cricket or Ladybug.

My vote goes for the D'fly 2. Either in H1 or ZDP-198

Dragonfly is definitely the most versatile. Can get it in H1, VG10, or ZDP-189. Half of those with either serrations or plain edge. They range from about $45-60ish and perform well out of their league. :)

I have an h1 pe dragonfly that is backup to my para 2 at work and a g10 dragonfly that I carry on the weekends and love them both . The balance is also a great small knife but is on the pricey side . I would go with a dragonfly.

I decided on a UK Pen Knife with a plain edge drop point blade. Not on my list, but I'm very impressed with it. Thanks for the input guys.

I always carry a knife in the watch pocket of my carharrts. Usually the cricket, a strider pt but most of the time a dragonfly2 in zdp. That is until about a week ago when I got the squeak. There is just something about this little knife. The back-spring feels much stiffer than the FRN UKPKs I have. Not quite G10 UKPK but close. Plus the price is right, and the steel is amazing. JMO. (The recent sprint dyad sneaks in once in a while too!)

EDIT: I see you have already chosen!

Agree with Mwalle6. D'fly in H-1 or ZDP. Either of these would be a great choice. If going to be around salt water, the H-1 would probably be better. Get both....you'll be a happy camper.
