Spyderco to the Rescue!

Spyderco to the Rescue! (Assisted by the Natives)

These are my favorite EDC and tool / work knives. I do have lots of other special purpose knives, but these are my go to knives for work and EDC. Something about the lightweight handles and fully serrated edges suits me perfectly. Thankfully, Spyderco has a size and style for most any need or loadout. I prefer to carry black or camo-handled blades with non-reflective (coated or painted) edges. Every knife I own is stainless which for me is a minimum requirement.

Luckily for me there's a local dealer who mostly sells overpriced camping gear to yuppies (hence they don't buy knives or know the first thing). But, he has a lot of outstanding knives in stock -- plus a lot of harder to find steels dating back 10+ years in obscure models and makes. Was in there today talking up the salt series and he had these. Some minor variations over the years. Was looking for the neon yellow mini-hawkbills; will have to find those online. These deploy really nice. Thanks for viewing.

Here are some comparison shots showing size and blade differences. If you are going to be getting this style of knife there are some differences to notice in belly and choil, plus grip position. I used to work as a patrol officer and these are the best knives for that role generally speaking as far as imo (believe it or not the economy ended that career =( ). In the future I'll post up some of the orange handled models as they are excellent for high visibility. Plus they are hard to loose. The VG-10 steel is probably the best in terms of general sharpness and edge retention although they will rust if not oiled. That's where the H1 is a good option. The powdered metals are ok but they have a tendency to chip on this style of serrated edge. There is some uncleaned burrito on the Native it's not rusted =). I use these every day quite often. The 79mm Rescue is probably the best for EDC if you only had one option (at least in my testing). There are variations of the same design in H1, VG-10 with yellow, black and orange handles. It would be nice if the Assist had a totally balled tip (meaning a small rounded portion with no flatness or half-sharpened edge). This would be better and if I'm not mistaken the older models were like this. This newer one has a partially sharpened tip (edge side) which I don't really like because it could cut someone unintentionally in a emergency. Not that big of deal though.

I have been thinking about getting an assist for each vehicle that I have and storing it in the visor or within hands reach, in case of an accident. YOu know one of those accidents with a cell phone addict (refer to other thread)

Excellent collection! I always carry my assist whenever I'm on duty. Definitely one of the best investments i've made in terms of rescue gear. Though I've barely used it on an actual call it sees use all the times in our trainings.
