caly3.5 issue
I just got a caly3.5 last night, and its great, but the opening/closing action is really harsh and gritty, and even the lock sticky and hard to depress. Anyone else have this issue?

Not with the Caly 3.5, but have had it on a couple other knives. Squirted a bit of dish detergent on the pivot and lockbar. Rinsed out with hot water at max pressure. Problem solved.

Although I know it works well, I'm a little squeamish about putting soap and water in my pivot. I am just anal about getting water in the pivot, because it can be hard to get it all out--sometimes I have to wash my knife and when I do, I blow it out with compressed air afterwards.
Usually, my process with a gritty pivot is first to simply oil it, work it a bit, and see if it goes away. If not, then, as blerv said, compressed air works well. I recommend depressing the lockbar all the way (like when it's being closed) and blow in the gap.
Lastly if there is still grit in there, I take an old toothbrush or pipe-cleaner and scrub the pivot, again going inside the gap between the lockbar and tang/pivot (having to hold the lock open again). I make sure there is oil in there before I do that, then usually blow it with compressed air to get whatever gunk might have been loosened up by the toothbrush but is still in there.
Don't worry, I've had a few lockbacks with gritty action, and right now they are all silky smooth! My Caly 3.5 was not really gritty, but it has gotten even smoother over the months of use.

Also received the 3.5 recently. One charming piece of work! I really love that knife and looking forward for the aogami piece. However I had another issue. If you close the blade and let it 'kick' on your indexfinger there is very small space before the edge begins. It bit me two times already; the kicker is too short!

Yeah, the Caly 3 and 3.5 both have a large choil cutout on the handle side, so the tang only acts as a "kick" from a forward finger choil grip. It's fine for me, because that's how I almost always grip my Caly knives anyway. I rarely grip the 3.5 with a behind-the-choil grip--I have very big hands, so it's a bit snug compared to the Para 2, Stretch 2 etc, although it's not bad, and certainly has a lot more room than the Caly 3.toomzz wrote:LOL :D

I used this method on my Caly 3.5 a couple of months ago and now it's the smoothest openg lockback I've ever owned.gull wing wrote:With all of the non-washer Spydercos, gritty is often an issue.
The best way of getting them smoothed out is:
Put a few drops of alcohol in the works, work it a little.
Blast it dry with compressed air.
Do the above twice.
Lube.
Works great. The alcohol will not stain anything.
Wow, that did work really well on my Caly 3 CF. It seem to work better than the soap & water method. Thanksgull wing wrote:With all of the non-washer Spydercos, gritty is often an issue.
