I love the Manix and find that it fits my hand extremely well. But I think that it really depends on what kind of knife you want. A lighter edc with more slicing, get the Para2, a heavier use edc with more varied use (perhaps some light chopping etc) I would go with the Manix. Plus the Manix is cheaper by quite a bit.

+1. Same here. I bought the Manix 2 M4 sprint to see what everyone was talking about wrt the Manix 2 (and M4) but just do not like the knife (nothing to do with M4 which is great). I think it's mainly the width (and weight) of it. Greatly prefer the ergos, handle, blade shape, lock, lightness, etc., of the Para 2 which is perfect for me. I know a lot of folks like the Manix 2 and it's a great knife but it's just not for me.

I really don't think that the manix 2 is any stronger than the para 2 in any way that matters. It's just probably the weight that gives that impression.

My local shop had a manix for $159. The knife just does not have that huge attraction for me like the para 2. If I'm correct it is just 154CM? I agree I need a new shop but they are quite loyal to me, just really rough with knife prices.

I can't afford to patronize vendors that charge excessively high prices. I think the satin 154CM Manix's are going for about $70 at CS (backordered at the moment, but I've seen them in stock there on and off fairly frequently). http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/search.aspx?find=manix+2

The Black blade version is about $90 at CS and is currently in stock. You could have it in about 4 business days from when you order it. Oh and they have great "loyalty" too. It's just a lot cheaper.

But I also greatly prefer the Para 2. Especially for about $92, if you don't mind waiting till they fill all the orders ahead of you which could take a few months. http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/search.asp ... military+2

TD has the Para2 listed for 110 for the satin versions. You can use the coupon code GD73 for 10% off your order. I just got my Para2 on wednesday from TD and I love it. Got it for $105 with shipping included by using that coupon code.

Enjoy!

If you look at the MSRP on Spyderco's on-line catalog (or paperback w/price sheet) and subtract approx. 40% that will give you a ballpark price for most knives on re-seller web sites. The Manix2 w/154CM can be gotten for about $70 for the satin blade and $93 for the black (DLC) blade on CS.com last time I looked. I wish I had a local shop to shop in though and would be willing to pay a little extra for having the hands-on experience prior to buying. I'd have to drive about 75 miles to find one.

Hey Viper, I am not knocking any store out there, but loyalty is a two-way street. Trust me, I totally understand, I have certain stores that I prefer to buy certain things from. However, the money that you save on one knife goes alot farther on another one. Spendig a small percentage higher for loyalty is one thing, but there is a limit to that percentage. If you can get 4 knives at one store for the same money as 3 somewhere else, that's a no-brainer really. Happy shopping.

Agreed. I bet if you buy there more often than the occasional buyer they will adjust their prices. They already know what their knives will sell for on the internet so maybe they could work with you. Having said that, stores have much more overhead than a web site. They have a lease, electricity, employees, theft insurance, etc. so exact price matching may be impossible.

It can be hard when comparing CS to places that charge so much. CS is a freak of nature in the Spyderco community. I'm still new to this whole thing, but I haven't found a single place that beats his prices.

It has totally spoiled me. I almost forget that people are trying to make money on these things. That being said, 160$ for a knife you can get for 70$ is ridiculous no matter how you slice it. I would politely tell the shop that you frequent their establishment because of great service, but the prices are just not tolerable. If you let them know you will have to go elsewhere they might change their tune. I wouldn't pay more than $20 above ebay prices... and I would have to want that knife REALLY bad to pay that.

Unless the knife you were looking at was a sprint run in something other than 154CM its a ripoff

I like CS enough to give an additional plug. I found them when looking for DMT sharpening products. CS had the best price and selection of anyone I seen up to then. They got my purchase that time and many times since. That makes me think his service is consistant no matter what company's products he sells.

Another vote of confidence for Cutlery Shoppe, their customer service is great and so are their prices.

They don't always have everything in stock, but its a small store and they will fill your order when they renew stock. They will even inspect the knife for flaws for you before sending it off if you ask them to.

Another store that has very good prices and customer service is Knife Center, they are larger, charge a little more, but usually have something in stock unless its a pre-order and will ship the same day.

Yeah I'm just not gonna buy knives there anymore. Sharpening/ supplies and occasional pepper spray for female family members and that would be it. Yesterday I went in just to kinda check on the prices for the para 2 and right off the bat they asked me if I needed anything sharpened or lubed/ tightened. I like handling a knife before I buy it and don't have friends into knives so I can't use theirs. However I'm not spending $180 on a Para2.

It would OK price if it was the Carpenter Steel Sprint model but ridiculous for the S30V models.

It actually kind of sad. I am all for the smaller local shops. I like to look at and hold what I am going to buy. I am also an impulse shopper and like quick turn-around. You run in, look around, buy it and you are heading home with the prize in your hand. HOWEVER, like Jack said, these stores can't compete with the web stores prices because of the overhead. In times like these, you have to look out for yourself and your family. Unless of course I win the lottery, and then I am going to open my own Spyderco Store and then go broke, because I would buy more for myself than I could sell.
