For a serrated blade dedicated to leather/rope cutting, I'd get a Tasman Salt SE or a Harpy SE.

Don't forget about the Tenacious. - G-10, CE or SE options, and great price point - if you lose it, doesn't hurt too much!

I think you should give the FRN a try. Get another serrated Delica in FRN.

The Salt 1 looks like a nice knife. How well does the H1 steel hold it's edge compared to the Delica blade?

I considered the Tenacious, but I'm not that good at sharpening knives and liked the harder steel of the Delica or others.

So many knives, so little $$! lol!

FRN is a great material, I wouldn't avoid it at all. The bi-directional texture (Delica) provides very good grip. The Lava grip (Salt series) does very good, too.

I haven't seen any super good information about H1 with a serrated edge. It seems like no one does testing with serrated edges because so many people have trouble sharpening them.

The hardness of the edge with H1 gets harder than any other metal so it SHOULD have good edge holding, the steel is known for having poor edge holding, though.

From what I understand serrated H1 out preformed any other steel in edge retention in Spyderco's own testing. Or was that merely a hardness test? Sorry I don't remember well enough... either way it should be very good!

Salt 1 is a great knife and I carry a plain edge one every day, zero maintenance required! In PE, H1 needs a bit more sharpening but it takes a crazy sharp edge pretty quickly on a sharpmaker :)

I do think the newer Delica 4 handle is a bit more comfortable however and the sharper point is more useful than the round nose of the salt.

Supermike, I'm with you on love for the feel of the Delica SS. It's been my favorite workhorse for at least 8 years (finally got the Delica 4 a couple months ago). The SS version both has a nice heft (imho) and is rather classy. But if you can learn to get along with the FRN, I'd strongly recommend it for your sweaty/muddy hand grip. The "bi-directional" grip is second to none! Originally I wasn't a fan of it aesthetically but recently I wanted another knife in ZDP-189 and so went with the Endura (available in the Delica SE as well). The trick with the FRN is to get one that isn't an obnoxious color. So I'd say either a black FRN Delica with VG10 or the British Racing Green (dark green) FRN Delica with ZDP (an incredible and affordable steel)

I'm thinking I need one of the Manix 2's with the Glow handle... so if I lose my next one, all I have to do is go out after dark and look for it. LOL! :D Those are a bit outside my budget, though...

Thanks for the continued input... right now, I'm actually leaning toward picking up a Tenacious SE for carrying while I'm riding, and then perhaps either a Manix 2 CE (for fun) or another Delica 4 CE for EDC (most likely SS). :)

Gotta love it when "what knife to get" turns into "I think I'll get two knives."

I think you should throw in an H1 Ladybug Hawkbill SE, just for the heck of it.

This is the advice I followed! I have a Tenacious on order, and am now "eyeballing" a Manix 2 and a Delica SS. I may only get one more for now, and pick up the other down the road sometime. The Tenacious offers the protection I need in the saddle and working around the horses, while not being as "painful" to lose.

Dangit... losing one knife is going to cost me!!

From my experience (I cut a lot of cardboard), H1 serrations are great - seriously. I can't think of one complaint about serrated H1. I strop mine at work once in a while on cardboard and it's sharp a long time. Give the Salt 1 a chance to win you over and you'll be glad you did, I think.

- best wishes, Jazz.

Wow, this sounds really familiar. I lost my SS Native in December, which was only my third Spydie in almost 20 years. When I started shopping for a replacement, and joined this forum, the Spydie venom kicked in, and before I knew it, I'm in for 15 new purchases since then! Btw, I subsequently found my Native between cushions in my couch ( I swear I had looked there!).

Now I'm an enabler like the rest of these guys!

Haha... yep. By putting the "use a cheaper one while riding" bug in my ear, you simultaneously got me looking at a new SS Delica CE for EDC to work, etc., and a Manix 2 just because... they're awesome.

Couple of Q's for whoever might want to take a stab at it (pun intended)...

1) why are the combo edges not very popular?? They seem to be a "best of both worlds" thing to me. I ordered my Tenacious with a SE just because of the rope/leather factor, but even for EDC I'm liking the combo edge.

2) how do you guys learn when a new sprint is coming out and what it'll look like? I'm so tempted to buy a Manix 2 right now, but then I see all kinds of awesome out there like glo handles, foliage green, etc. I saw someone mention a transparent blue Manix handle? Just trying to decide whether I should wait... I can handle a few knives, but I can't afford a few dozen. LOL!

1) why are the combo edges not very popular?? While I do like :spyder: s in CE, I prefer a "dedicated" edge in PE or SE for the job at hand. So, I'd personally would prefer to carry a PE and SE versus one in CE, although I appreciate the concept of the CE.

2) how do you guys learn when a new sprint is coming out and what it'll look like? I just watch the Forum for news.

The transparent blue manix is supposed to be full production so you won't need to jump all over it to get one. I'm holding off buying a manix myself because I want that translucent one. Checking the forum for news is a great way, but I also like checking out youtube for blade and shotshow coverage. There are a few people that do some great interviews with all the knife companies showcasing their new products. Blade is this weekend so we should be seeing some updates soon!

So my Tenacious (SE) has shipped and is on the way, and I just bought a new SS Delica 4 (CE) tonight... because I just loved the feel of that knife! I'll use the SS version as more of an EDC, and will use the Tenacious when riding or messing around the farm.

I really want a Manix 2, but not sure I can drop the extra $$ right now. Maybe soon, though... I have to decide if I want the black blade or not. ;)

The tenacious se is a great working value knife. I have a rescue that I just got on closeout from CS that I have used on our dogs and horses. I have had my eye on the assist for similar uses, plus carrying in the truck/Car visor as a safety tool in case of a wreck.
