Obviously, the majority of us here are :spyder: enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean there aren't things we'd like to see different. What changes would you make to your favorite model(s), or across the board?
I'd replace S30V as the standard steel for Golden & Taiwan models with CTS-XHP or Elmax.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

If I was making that choice to change steel from S30V.......catamount wrote:Obviously, the majority of us here are :spyder: enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean there aren't things we'd like to see different. What changes would you make to your favorite model(s), or across the board?

1st I would have to look at availability, very important since these would be full production models.
2nd look at strength, rust resistance, shock resistance, wear resistance, and cost.
3rd Look at the models that S30V is generally used for.
After taking all of that into consideration.....
I would choose ELMAX as the steel I would change too or not change at all and keep S30V.
In the end if it's not broken don't fix it and if it needs to be fixed then I would pick the best steel based on the above.

I would go the oppsite way, with more knives produced in cheaper, but incredibly sharp, blade steels like sandivik 13c62. This blade steel is inexpensive, but takes an incredibly sharp edge with only a few swipes of the sharpmaker.
Given current ecconomic concerns and the general proliferation of decent quality, inexpensive knives, I think some golden made knives in this blade steel would be awesome.
They would offer USA pride, spyderco ergonomics, and plenty of cutting performance, for a very reasonable price point.
Considering the rise of the yen and the addition of higher end knives to the lineup, I would like to see the lower price point spydies expanded to balance things out.

Going that way there is also N690, already extremely popular over in Europe and has a rock solid proven track record as a knife steel for a lot of good reasons.mark greenman wrote:I would go the oppsite way, with more knives produced in cheaper, but incredibly sharp, blade steels like sandivik 13c62. My ideas would probably put them out of business in short order. Drop everything but the midlocks, lose the Boye dents and the clips, switch them all to Damasteel and bolsters. :D

Put a larger radius on the flat G-10 scales.
More sprint runs.
Made in Golden is great, but like Seki City, domestic steel only.

I agree that most of us are spydernuts, but we all different spydernuts. Some people love lightweights and some love heavyweight :) . So let's keep variety.catamount wrote:Obviously, the majority of us here are :spyder: enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean there aren't things we'd like to see different. I certainly would love to see something less expensive than than LionSpy with Elmax, but I will be much more exciting to see clip-less Caly3/3.5/Persian made in Damascus, like Sprint Delica (2.5mm thick blade, please).
More colors in polished G10 and micarta handle. British racing green G10.
And of cause as many as possible US made knives.

I like your idea, may be not to extend of "everything". I would certainly enjoy 2-3 sprint or limited runs every year of Damascus/bolsters/wood or bone or stag/no clip.
Actually I am very impressed with Damascus Delica sprint.

Higher flat grinds on the thinner blades, like the grinds on the older Delicas - FFG on these is just too fragile. It makes these knives less "all-around" knives. Not trying to start an argument, just the facts.
They still slice great with the high flat grind (plus they look better). Get rid of the liner locks, also, since you asked.

wire clips do work as low riders, but they're too flimsy and need too much bending to "get them right", usually they're too tight. Never had any broblems with the standard clips, but I'd buy a load of low riders if they would be made by Spyderco, for Spyderco knives. Aftermarket ones usually look like aftermarket ones. They don't look good on my Spydies.
