New to Spyderco WOW

#1

Post by Forest »

3 weeks ago I purchased a new CRKT knife to replace my old CRKT m-16. In the same purchased I bought a foliage green ladybug for my fiancé. The edge on the Spyderco is by far superior. The handle is engineered with purpose and feels great. I mean it blows the crkt out of the water and it is half the size. After gawking over the knife she had I decided I would buy me one. I bought the Pacific Salt because I do a lot of fishing and they end up in the bottom of the boat or in tackle box more often than I would like. Then the addiction began… the sharp maker will arrive today, next week I will receive a delica for EDC the salt is too big for that purpose for me. I also got another purple ladybug for my fiancés sister’s birthday. How could a company make these products so addictive only 3 weeks and I have bought 4 knives and a sharpener?

You won't get any good answers around here, we're all in the same boat man. I haven't bought another brand since before '05 and honestly there's only one knife of another brand i'm interested in and it's $400 so i won't be buying it either. I guess that makes me a fanboy, but honestly there's enough diversity in the Spyderco lineup to pretty much meet all my needs...the customer service is top notch, they listen to their customers...what more could you want? I have no use for swords and machetes and battle axes LOL.

Congrats and welcome! Last year, I set out to get just one quality EDC for about $30. Since then, I have bought at least 32 spydies, most of them over $100..

It can get a bit expensive (and compulsive :D ), but it's well worth it. I sometimes think "what other hobby can you buy the absolute best top-of-the-line equipment for $100 or less?"

It's pretty funny, since you probably only need one Spyderco knife and it will probably last you at least 10 years of not your lifetime, but people seldom stop at one...

BTW, good call on getting the Sharpmaker early. I could have saved myself some frustration if I hadn't waited a few months to get one. I suggest you buy or make a strop (I made one from a 1x3 and some vegetable tanned leather, you can even use an old belt), and get some chrome oxide stropping compound off of Amazon for about $7-10, and you're set. That's what I use, and I'm pleased to say that every one a my knives can shave hair cleanly and push cut through paper with little resistance. Although, the only thing that's not covered it reprofiling--I'm looking at getting an edge pro eventually for that, but I hear the diamond sharpmaker stones work pretty well too.

Hi Forest,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Thanx much for the interest and support.

We at Spyderco work hard to serve our customers.

Hope you enjoy the sharpener. The creation of the different steels from different foundries and the edges they can become is one of the deeper enjoyments of the "knife" s a hobby.

Remember, moderation is a good thing.

I innocently bought a Tenacious almost a year and a half ago with an Amazon gift card. Now, about 120 Spydies later, I'm officially hooked.

Thanks Sal and Spydercrew for offering so much depth, thought and creativity (not to mention quality, value and service) to your wonderfully addictive products!

I've always liked Spyderco for their serrated knives. But now that I've tried a few plain, gotta give a thumbs up. Plain delica on the left, serrated tenacious on the right. About to switch it to either a serrated delica or a harpy. Love the weight on the stainless handles. Can't decide which to get first.

Got the Sharp maker today and what a useful tool. Sharpened everything in the house today. I was left lots of leather tools from my grandfather who was a tanner. I have never been able to sharpen the tools to the edge he could achieve. This sharpmaker sharpened most of them all to perfection. It is great to hear I can make my own strop with some compound.
Sal great to hear from you I watched the DVD with the sharpmaker only to check the site and see you replied. What an organization you run here. Moderation is indeed key I will keep this in mind.
Thanks for all the welcomes

Consider yourself lucky - my first two Spydercos arrived at the same time. A Gayle Bradley and a Sage 2. Now, in less than a year, I've also acquired a Superleaf, a Manix II, a Para II, a Perrin PPT, 3 FFG Delicas, a Caly 3, and I'm waiting on a Sage 2 pretty soon.

As a rule i never buy two knives (or two CD's for that matter) at the same time because surely one will be better than the other no matter how good the other is and it'll get overlooked.

Oh oh... I think you better run Forest - run! But seriously, welcome to the forum. :) We all come around to Spyderco sooner or later, but when we do, we really appreciate the great designs and are hooked. Hopefully you stick around and talk about Spydies.

- best wishes, Jazz.

It is not "if you will be bitten" by the syderco bug, it is "when". We all are here for the same addictive reason that I still can't quite figure out. Every time time that get a new one, i will say that that should do it for a while, but I no sooner make an order before I am trying to figure out what's next.

I feel ya. I have ALWAYS been “into” knives, and I bought many, but it wasn’t until my first Spyderco (Dragonfly) did I realize how deep the passion could be. That’s the first time I couldn’t put a knife down. I played with it constantly, just opening and closing it, staring at it. Fondling it. A measly little FRN Spyderco folder got me ADDICTED.

Spyderco is RESPONSIBLE for my obsession. Before that, the Kershaws and Gerbers just didn’t do anything “special” for me (don’t get me wrong, I love both makers) - but the Spyderco “triggered” something in my head - I don’t know what it was, but it got in my blood, kind of like riding a motorcycle. You just can’t quit it, once you “get" it.

Okay, I think I just talked myself into a frantic need to acquire a new Spyderco. The hunt begins...
