Trying out VG-10

Well, I just ordered a Blue FFG endura and I'm going to try my luck out on VG-10. From all the good stuff said about this knife and steel I'm not worried a bit. I think the longer blade over the delica, will be a great outdoor/camping blade and I can't wait to try some food prep with the FFG. I'm hope the delica/endura/harpy combo will make for all my EDC needs.

I really like VG-10. I used my CE Endura 4 yesterday to open 30 sacks of mortar, and it dulled the edge, off course. But it wasn't severe, and I was able to bring the edge back quite quick. Great stuff!

VG10 is great stuff. It sharpens up really easily and takes a super fine edge. It'll hold that edge pretty well too.

First time posting, but I've had several Spydies over the years. Got a Bill Moran last year and got a nick in the belly. A few quick strokes on soft, medium, and hard Arkansas stones and you can never tell it was there. Still shaving sharp too. Trying out a new plain edge delica now.

My older Temperance I model with VG-10 has been my constant companion these past 6 months. I use it for a myriad of cutting chores as well as a self defense carry on evenings when I have to walk a measurable distance.

All the Spyders I've owned with VG-10 have all been good to me. It's not my favorite blade steel but it's in my top 10 to be sure..... JD

VG-10 is remarkable steel. It takes a fine edge so readily, it teaches you what you should be looking for when you're sharpening more recalcitrant stuff.

Frankly, I'm amazed that it's not more widely used. I guess I should be grateful -- if every knife company was using it, the price would soar.

Another fan of the VG-10/Endura/FFG combination here! It's a great steel, it takes and holds an edge awfully well for it's price point, at least in my experience.

I love VG-10, especially in a thin FFG like on the Endura and Delica FFG's. The Endura FFG was one of the knives that really got me hooked on Spyderco.

One thing I love about VG-10 is how it responds so amazingly to stropping. I barely even have to use the Sharpmaker on my VG-10 folder (usually only when I get a huge roll on the edge). It seems like I can take an edge that catches badly when trying to slice paper, and strop it a bit, and it's magically back to a razor edge

Ditto on all the good comments about VG-10 - it's a marvelous steel. No complaints - good choice indeed!

Altho ive been a steel snob and especially with Japanese steels im very surprised I haven't bought a knife yet with VG10 for the blade steel.
Its a highly rated steel on par with S30V to many people, Some say its a bit lower tho.
Ive got several Spydies i want to buy yet and i hope at least one comes in VG10.

That sort of depends on who makes the S30V. I had one of those Doug Ritter "survival" Benchmade folders with S30V. Great for light use, but if you take it in a wilderness situation it doesn't last long. I'm a bit leery about trying a Spyderco with it.

I think you will the find the extra blade length very useful over the Delica.I always thought the Endura would be too big untill I bought one.And the weight for such a large knife is amazing.Its become my favorite knife.

I'm thinking the extra blade length will be nice. I'm thinking the delica will come with me to work,gym,church and buming around the house. The endura will be my pocket for everything else, camping,hunting,fishing,yard work.

I can't wait. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week.

I would say it's basically like many here have said...VG10 will stay hair shaving sharp longer but S30V will keep a sharper working edge long past the point that VG10 has thrown in the towl. S30V seems to loose that scary sharp feeling very quickly when used but keeps a working sharp edge for a long time.

I wouldn't be. You wouldn't see S30V in such knives as the Paramilitary/Yojimbo/Yojimbo 2 etc if the steel wasn't up to par. It's takes a slight bit more work to sharpen than VG10 but in my use (which is a pretty heavy EDC use) it holds a working edge longer than VG10 so it's a small trade off....and i mean small, nothing like sharpening ZDP-189. If anything i would say the biggest difference between these two steels is that when pushed hard, VG10 will roll the edge whereas S30V won't. I also haven't had a single issue with chipping S30V either and i sharpen my Para down to about 28 degrees inclusive.

Oh i know that feeling...it's probably the only reason i don't own a bunch more Spydies. I like to think of S30V as the middle ground between VG10 and ZDP. It sort of has the best of both blades.

VG-10 is terrific stuff, for me extremely user friendly, takes a really nice edge easily and keeps that nice sharp edge. Depends on your use though.

More frequent use might lean you towards S30V, ZDP (PITA to sharpen), M4, or others. Carbon steels are always a good option if the stainless doesn't work for you :)

I'm in the same boat. I have one shop 10 miles from me but they only carry about 8-10 spyders and there all at MSRP.

I already own a ZDP delica. One of the reasons Im trying VG-10 because I heard it hold a hair poping edge as long if not longer than ZDP.

As soon as my edge doesn't pop hair, it's back on the sharpener.
