possible new knife series?

#1

Post by Popsickle »

How would you like to see a knife series that instead of different handle materials and locks... we could have different blade steels released(as a series). Or even a knife that has different blades offered that could be changed out in favor of a different steel as well as possibly purchasing new colored scales to change out? Call it the Spyderco Custom :D thoughts? what platforum would you use...current or new? what type of lock?

this knife would be a folder unlike the mule team.

I would say frame lock as is it the easiest to reassemble and does not require too many parts.

And maybe a bushing system for quick centering of blade.

That sounds really cool. I doubt I would be able to afford it but still a good idea.

Ha Ha no I realize, I was just having a little fun. I actually suggested something similar a few hours ago in the Sprint run thread...that Mules and a new and simple folder be the way to go for testing new steels.

But I think a way to get various steels in a particular knife would be great. Trouble is...how to choose one that most would agree on? Personally...I think that Para2 as this knife would satisfy most...not all, but most.

The main obstacle would be finding a model that could be produced in Japan and the US, as Japanese makers only use Japanese steel while the US can get pretty much all the other steels, but not the Japanese stuff. Unlike Mules, which are just cut out blanks and can be done simply and cheaply in any of the countries that make knives, a folder would require scales, screws, a lock, and many other parts that would add engineering time and effort, adding significantly to the cost.

Don't get me wrong! I would love to see something like this happen! I just find it highly unlikely. But we can still dream, right?

Times change and attitudes sometimes change with them, but FWIW, Spyderco has rejected the idea of a "custom shop" on multiple occasions as an inefficient use of their limited space and manpower. As for a blade steel series, while I'll admit to no real interest in one, the Manix, Military, and Para already seem to be serving that purpose.

I'm a bit confused by these two, seemingly contradictory, statements...

Frankly, I see no difference, beyond a semantic one, between the Mules and most Sprint Runs. Both are produced in limited quantities and a specific configuration is made only once.

Here's my idea for this series, Spyderco could sell the main knife, a titanium framelock/g10-knife, kind of how the M4 Military is set up, with a basic steel like Vg-10, and a black G10 handle. Then make other g10 and carbon fiber colors available sold separately like hinderer does, as well as extra "parts" like they do for the delica/endura screws, washers and such, and then just release new blades like the mule team, which would of course have to be in sprints. OR they could sell just the Basic titanium frame, g10, blade, and parts seperately separately. Maybe have some of the more common steels (Vg-10, S30V, 154cm, H1) available in limited production like the ti military where they only make like 100 per month, depending on how popular that steel is/sells. And then have limited runs (s90V, M4, S110V, Super blue, Elmax, etc)doing the 100 per month, until sales start slowing down then discontinue or maybe 500 every 4-6 months. They could do say Elmax for a couple months until (100 per month) until sales slow then go on to the next steel, or just have like 3 steels going at a time like 75 per month. I think a 3.5 inch blade would be good. Also if they didn't want to design a new knife, I think the para 2 is easy enough to put together and take apart, just buy a new para 2, and then spyderco offers the parts kit, swapable blades and handles (titanium).
