ELMAX was developed for the Plastics industry were the chemicals are very corrosive so it had to be very rust resistant while still being tough and wear resistant.

What that does for a knife blade is it gives us everything we want the most and none of the things we don't want like rust, chipping (Even at high hardness) etc.

In the alloy percentages a 1 percent change is a huge difference, anything under 1 percent total is for grain refinement mostly.
What are the differences you have found between Elmax and M390? Are there any areas where Elmax betters M390? I understand there is already an M390 Mule in the works, so it would be great to have an Elmax one for comparison.

The edge retention on M390 is higher, rust resistance is higher, it costs quite a bit more because of the complicated alloy content.

ELMAX is tougher at higher hardness, it's a very tough steel.

You could make a chopper out of ELMAX. ;)

Hi Jim,

Thanx for posting the question. I guess it must have slipped my mind, (senior moment) when I last communicated with you, but we had already ordered in some Elmax for a Mule Team and it has just come in.

We'll be doing a Mule Team run and we'll have enough steel for a run of a knife as well.

This is excellent news. I am in for a Mule team. There are a few models that could get this and I would be excited as well. I would def buy a millie, but would also consider some others.

A nickel says it will be the Manix 2 that gets the Elmax.
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

Or Para 2. In either case, I have a feeling it will be a dealer, or distributor, exclusive.

Hopefully I'm wrong, it will be a regular production Para 2, and everyone who wants one won't have any trouble getting it at a reasonable price ;)

I would probably go for a Para 2. Already have a Manix and Military and I don't currently have any comp locks (until the yo 2 drops).

If it's a Manix, I will probably just go for the Mule. Seems like a good steel for a fixed blade.

I'm getting kind of excited now. A Mule for sure. Then a Para 2, Manix 2, Superleaf, Native, the Bill Moran fixed blade, the Perrin design fixed blade, a Temperance 2, Bushcraft, and a Kumo just for good measure (if I may throw in my slightly obsessive two cents).

As some know I have done extensive testing on this steel and I believe it would be a great addition to the Mule Team Project.

It's a 3rd Generation Particle Technology steel and it's very clean, very tough and will take an extremely fine edge.

You can find them on the Spyderco factory store site - they currently only have the Cobalt and Aogami Super Blue models available. Everything else is sold out.
