I know a few people who were made in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc.

Seem like good people to me.

Fast forward a couple yrs from the orig post, and many of Spyderco's best knifes are now being produced in Taiwan. Or will be in the next few months.

I probably wouldn't have, but it does make sense.

The "base" versions of the Military, Para 2, and Manix 2 seem to be selling well and higher priced Sprint Runs of them sell like hotcakes, so the Golden plant is probably running full capacity. Economic climate here makes plant expansion risky, so it's either outsource most of the new models, or not produce them at all. The maker they've found in Taiwan does an outstanding job in terms of fit and finish and, unlike their Japanese makers, is amenable to using steel and other materials supplied by Spyderco.
