Question about blade coatings

#1

Post by Evil D »

This is probably a No answer question...but i have to ask. Is there a coating out there, sort of like teflon maybe, that can help prevent sticky things from sticking to a blade? What i mean is, for example i cut open a lot of boxes and i'm always getting tape glue on my blade and it's a big pet peeve of mine. The glue sticks to the edge and gives it a dull feeling, plus i get sick of rubbing and washing off the glue. It would be great if there was a coating that at least made it easier to wipe off the glue...i know there's probably no chance in totally preventing it but if DLC for example just made it 50% easier to wipe off it would be a giant leap forward.

I don't know of a blade coating put out by Spyderco that is more likely to prevent tape gunk build-up, but WD-40 cleans blade gunk off like nobody's business.

Don't know so much about coatings but chemicals work A LOT better than just washing and rubbing. Lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol and a bunch of other solvents.
Haven't tried WD-40 on glue but if it works, there's the WD-40 in a pen applicator. ;)

I may have to start using something like that, but i'd like something that prevented or slowed build up if possible. Probably a pipe dream..lol

Have they come up with a non-stick coating for cookware that doesn't require plastic utensils? If not, there's not much chance one could stand up to the things a blade must.

No, teflon will scratch off with metal utensils and is poisonous if you ingest it. I know the edge itself wouldn't be coated just like DLC, but it would keep glue from building up on the sides.

I think maybe just polishing my blade might help more than anything. Maybe if it starts getting on my nerves enough i'll get the WD40 pen.

I just make a quick cut in the cardboard after cutting tape, and that seems to remove any tape gunk left behind.

All my coated blades which is alot since i prefer all black knives get coated several times with Tuff-Glide. I cover the blade and spread it evenly and let it dry as its a dry film lube.
Ill coat it 2-3 times before use and so far it seems to help with scratches also as the lube makes things slide off instead of getting dug in with the porous coatings.

Also my Gayle Bradley gets the same treatment due to the finicky M4 blade.
It also is a good pivot lube as its thin and penetrates well when you don't want to disassemble the knife and apply grease like i prefer to do.

Probably the best possible solution. In my experience, tape residue will still stick to a mirror polished blade, but is much easier to remove, especially the nasty black tar-like stuff.

Oh yeh, I find that taking off gunk is much easier from my polished ZDP endura.

I've had the same experience with and without a coated blade. That tape glue is a pest! I usually rub it off with my fingers and pants and if it's a bear then out comes the goo gone.
