Reworking Kydex?

#1

Post by Knifewing »

Well, I finally got my Boker Rhino and it's great--all that I expected. It comes with a nice Kydex sheath. Unfortunately, my sheath fits the blade so tightly I can barely get the knife out with two hands yanking on it--perhaps not the safest draw :) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to remedy the situation. Should I just warm the Kydex with a hair dryer and wriggle the knife around to stretch it out? Put it in the toaster oven? Make it simple, if possible, as I'm a knife guy but not much of a tool guy...Thanks!

You could do it with a hair dryer or even a butane torch, but its a fine line you have to be careful that you don't make it too loose. If you make it looser with heat it will still have to break in a bit and might become too loose after a few draws. I don't have a rhino yet but i have a boker gnome and it was really tight in the sheath to start with but after drawing and re-sheathing about 50 times it loosened up and now i can draw it one handed off a neck chain.
You are only as sharp as your knife. "Life is short. If you don't stop and look around... and do whatever you want all the time... then you could miss it."

I can't remember exactly what I did to mine but I think I actually shaved some material off from the edge of the lip that wraps around finger guard portion. I don't think that's necessary but it helped the process. Really what you need to do is wear it in, just keep re-sheathing as if you were playing with a folder. :)
