Impressions of the J.D. Smith

I have been EDC'n the J.D. Smith for sometime now and think its a great blade. I haven't seen to many people even mention it. I was just wondering what the general consensus was on the knife and why you all thought it isn't as popular as the others. The VG 10 is obviously popular as well as the green G 10. So I guess that leaves the blade shape and ergos both of which I like. Thanks.

I scored one for a very good price a while ago and I have to say I love it. I especially love the long, thin blade. That is probably my favorite part of it. I'm not a huge fan of foliage green and I think a few people were probably a little tired of foliage green at the time. Foliage green also adorned the Barong and Khukuri at the time and my theory is that the color limited the appeal to a larger set of potential buyers. There are other threads on this knife where users have pointed out finish issues particularly around the ricasso. Mine came pretty darn nice as far as fit and finish go. Definitely a sleeper of a knife and it must be held to be truly appreciated.

I'm a long time fan of the J.D. Smith. The long slender blade has it uses and compliments the ownership of any of the wide leafblades that are so popular right now. I find the handle shape among the most comfortable of Spyderco's designs.

Hard to say why more haven't praised the wonderful properties of this design, perhaps the blade shape isn't very sheeple friendly, the length exceeds legal limitations in many jurisdictions, or the narrow pointy blade can't load up on peanut butter and spread it as nicely as a leafblade :)

I have a J.D. Smith, and I like it, but it's not one of my favorites. There's just nothing really extraordinary about it to me. I do like the matte finish on the clip.

I sold my D2 Military to get a JD Smith, and I really liked my D2 Military, I use to think I was a steel snob, but since I have been carrying my JD Smith I realized I am a design snob. :)

I was always attracted to the knife, but was also always bothered by a problem that I run into often...blade too short for the handle. It's the reason that there are many knives that I love or own, but don't use very frequently.

I'd probably buy one if it didn't have G10 handles. Same reason I never bought a khukri.

Well established outdoor knives like the D2 Millie, D2 para, and the Foliage green Manix, are superbly suited to the foliage green color. They have sold rapidly and remain highly sought after.

Other knives, especially classy knives like the smith, or unconventional designs such as the khukri or barong, are much better in black or another, less woodsy/military coloring.

The foliage green on the JD smith was really quite jarring for me personally, and I love foliage green. But there's only so much of a unusual color I want in my collection- whether its in my closet of clothing or my sock drawer of shanks.

If the knife had been in black g10, polished g10, micarta, or carbon fiber (esp the new CF that appears on the lum) the knife would have become an instant classic, as it has superb lines, 4 way clip, and a great blade shape.

The color choice simply clouded over the shining wonder of the design in this instance, which is why it is one of the only sprint runs still widely available.
