Excellent- with the help of a good friend on your side of the pond, my M4 Manix 2 has arrived in the UK. BentoBox Shop weren't willing to do it direct so I owe my mate a big favour.
I, too, was surprised by the colour. I'm not in the least bit bothered though; for me it's all about the CPM M4.
It is good and sharp (of course) but not like CPM M4 can be! This will be remedied and I'll put the knife through it's paces in the woods next week (along with the a couple of mules and a Warrior.)

Here is my understanding and I think it's right. An exclusive run means Spyderco only sells the model to one reseller. You can buy the Manix 2 with CM154 steel from several web site resellers. Bentoboxshop is the only place to get the M4 Manix 2. They originally ordered 600 knives. If they want to get more they have to order at least 400. I think that number is required by Spyderco to justify the cost of setting up the machinery to make them. They won't just make one knife for example.jeffwatts@comcast.net wrote:Got my invoice last night and paid. Shipping on 4/23/11. Still don't understand the disclaimer on the invoice "they have the option to purchase 400 more" I guess exclusives are different than sprints?
I asked Spyderco in an email a while back what exactly was a sprint run knife and this was their email reply:
A Sprint Run is a limited, one time only, production of a knife design/model. Production numbers are less than 1500 pieces. Sprints Runs are knives that are currently in production or discontinued models with something different about them; handle material, handle color, blade steel, etc..
Like I said, the limited exclusive run explanation is my understanding and the sprint run explanation is a quote from Spyderco via email.

If you take apart your knife, it's on the blade tang. It can also be found on the box that it came in.jackknifeh wrote:Do you have to un-put-together the knife to see that? I've heard you do. If not, where is it?
Thanks,

The ship date (4/23/11) predicted I got came on a paypal invoice. Those who got their knife on the first shipment, do you remember if you got a message from bentoboxshop when the knives actually ship and maybe a ETA date? A message from bento would be more accurate I'd think since they actually handle the knife. Paypal only deals with money.
Thanks,
Jack

same here :D .jackknifeh wrote:I got the email from Paypal with a tracking number. It shipped USPS and the expected delivery date is 4/25/11. :D I'd say that is very fast delivery for USPS but I believe the people who got their knives on the first shipment made comments on how fast the shipping was.

I figure most people who are involved in this thread either have a knife with M4 blade or will be getting one. One quick question. Is M4 brittle to the point of getting chips in the edge if the sharpening angle is as low as 20 degrees inclusive? I noticed that ZDP-189 chipped for me when sharpened to low angles so now I use a very low back bevel and an edge bevel of 18 or 20 degrees per side. I don't want to talk about ZDP, it has been covered enough. Does anyone have a blade of M4 steel sharpened to an angle lower than 30 degrees inclusive and how does it perform? Anyone use an edge sharpened to 20 degrees inclusive? If so, how does it perform?
I should be getting my Manix 2 in the mail tomorrow and was hoping to get some final opinions about M4. Any info is greatly appreciated. I just don't want to figure it out for myself. Instead of trying this angle, then that, I'd rather get recent opinions from people who will be honest and have more experience with different steels than I do.
Thanks,
Jack

i can't specifically recall anyone in particular running 20 degrees inclusive on M4. you might have to be the one to test M4 at 20 inclusivejackknifeh wrote:I figure most people who are involved in this thread either have a knife with M4 blade or will be getting one. Jim, I would love to test M4 at low angles but I don't have high quality photographic equipment nor the skills to use it like some people do. You wouldn't believe it but there are people out there that spend lots of time and effort to produce great tests on everyday material, then post the results complete with pictures. Do you know anyone like that? I mean these guys (or girls) are real knife nerds. :) What's worse is there are people who actuall are interested in those results. These people obviously have no lives and probably can't get girlfriends either. :D But, I know we don't know any of these people.jimnolimit wrote:i can't specifically recall anyone in particular running 20 degrees inclusive on M4. you might have to be the one to test M4 at 20 inclusive.
I'll see what angle is on the edge when it gets here (about 6 hours til mailman time). Every Spyderco I've checked the angle on has been between 16 and 18 degrees per side. If it is as sharp as I expect it to be I don't want to touch the very edge but I might lower the back bevel. But, being FFG and a knife that I'm going to use for tougher uses I will probably leave it alone at first. Usually I like to put a pretty mirror edge on a knife. Maybe this time I'll perform a new test (for me anyway). I'll test the edge/angle that comes from Spyderco. Maybe it's possible that they really know what they are doing and their edges don't really need my help. Naw, that couldn't be true. :D :D I will be putting it through some pretty significant use though to test edge retention. For me that means lots of cardboard and whittling. I think those materials provide a pretty good indication of retention without loosing articles of clothing. :D
I'm just looking forward to getting the knife. This knife will complete what I call a complete set of working knives. I'm not a collector per se but I have developed a desire to get "one more knife" then I'll quit buying them.
