You must have used one stronger than Roman's. I used to use the little ones. You need to do light strokes anyway so a weak band would serve to check your pressure on the stones.

Cannot imagine how this can happen, I use really wide band and wrap around few times, unless base had a crack. I have couple extras and can mail you the same, what I am using, if you want.

I should explain: it didn't actually crack the base. It broke the plastic within the slots of the rods on one of the rods, causing that rod to be pulled much more upright that the other (and than would be possible on a perfect condition base) by the rubber band.
