Sage 3 vs Caly 3.5

#1

Post by Handwrecker »

So I'm starting to feel the itch for a new Spydie, and the Sage 3 and Caly 3.5 have me the most interested. Could anyone post a pic of the knives side by side, so I can get an idea of blade length and handle thickness? If you have any experience with either knives, please feel free to share it here.

Thanks!

Caly 3.5 is a tad longer, but it's narrower, thinner (aside from the pivot), and has 1/2" more blade.

I love both knives, but I definitely give the Caly more pocket time, and I think it is a more versatile design. That's mainly because it has a similar size and weight closed, and still has a nice sized choil, but also a good amount of extra edge. I also love the thin grind on the Caly series, it makes for a better cutter than the Sages IMO. Also, I like the fine tip on the Caly 3.5, great for detail work or picking out splinters. I also love the slim form-factor of the 3.5--both in holding and carrying it, it makes for great comfort.

The Sage 3 has it's merits and charm as well though. The newly used Bolt Lock makes for incredibly smooth and easy deployment and closing for me, and is just a cool new gadget for a knife collector. Also the blue G-10 is awesome, along with the G-10 backspacer. While the Caly's grind is thinner, the Sage's grind is nothing to sneeze at--it can still slice very will. The tip is not as sharp or long as the Caly, but that also leads to greater strength--I think the more stout S30V tip is much less likely to break than the admittedly fairly "fragile" (not really) tip on the Caly 3.5. It shouldn't be a problem unless you plan to drop it on cement though, in which case, I can't really see the Sage's tip surviving either.

I agree with all of Jon's comments regarding the Caly 3.5 and its attributes. It's just a fantastic design with amazing grind, ergos and packs a lot of knife in a compact and fairly stylish form. I can imagine this knife would be awesome with some fancier scale materials like Micarta or exotic woods plus a bolster. (Which is not say it's not already awesome, cause it certainly is.)

Don't have a Sage so can't comment on that one.

Thanks for all the photos and feedback everyone, I ended up settling on the Caly 3.5. That thin grind and compact design won me over. Can't wait to get it in hand!
