Navaja, "WOW"

#1

Post by gunnut35 »

I just got my Navaja and i really like this one. I was concerned that it might be too big for me but it rides better in my pocket then the GB does. The only thing that may take some time for me to get used to is the lock. I have no problems with the GB lock but the one on this Navaja will take some time to master. The fit and finish is excellent and the blade is solid as a rock.
I will have no problems carrying this one as a EDC.

Heh, the mailman brought mine today as well. I have been looking forward to this thing for a long time... and it does not disappoint.

Honestly I thought the blade would be too small when I first heard of the blade length. Also thought the thing was ugly as sin when I first saw a pic, but after handling one at the Plaza Cutlery, I must say I might just pick one up :D

I tried one out and the ergos were great but the lock was pretty stiff. I had no problem with the very similar lock on the Barong and Khukuri so I wonder if this issue is widespread on the Navaja and if so, does the lock loosen up with use?

The lock on mine came a bit on the stiff side... but after just a day of playing with it (pretty much non stop... much to the chagrin of my friends and family), it has already gotten much easier to manipulate.

Lock release

#9

Post by Ed Schempp »

Like the Barong and Khukuri the Navaja lock takes time to get used to. I've now carried mine for a month or so and do not notice any difficulty closing the knife. I generally cross the lock bar with my thumb nail to depress the lock. You do have to understand that as a farmer my hands see a lot or work and can be like a sherpa's feet, and are hard and durable. I' still refining the use of knife on usual tasks, I'm liking the angle of approach of the straight edge near the tip,as I'm finding that I use this vector quite often.

Enjoy the knife...Take Care...Ed

Always great to hear from you Ed. Since I have CPA hands I'm glad to hear from Jordan that the lock loosens up with a little use.

Thank you Ed.
I do not think the lock will be a problem because i am already getting the hang of it, and the blade shape will definitely come in handy pruning my tomatoes. :)

gunnut35,

Thank you for pictures. They are very nice. I also had some difficulties with lock release at the beginning, but in couple days figure it out how to make it easy. If it will loosen up after a while, even better. Gorgeous knife. Love it. Certainly belong to my top 3.

Great looking knife. I wish it was a mid lock.

i wasn't a fan of the navaja, but those pics do it justice. you just upgraded my opinion from "not my cup of tea" to "that's a pretty nice knife". congrats on your new :spyder:

I've had my Navaja for about 2 weeks now and it does combat with my GB for pocket time but seems to be winning out. It's a REALLY superior devise. It's pretty, it's offensive, it's NOT PC, and it cuts like a Banshee in heat. It's a warrior in a gentleman's package. Oh, and ratchet or not, it opens slicker than ANY of my other Spydies.

I have small hands so the choil and the handles as a whole are too large for me, or at least that's my excuse to save the money. I love that ratchet thing on the blade.

GN --- we might be brothers from different mothers !!! I have "girly-man" hands that are both small and thin size --- the Navaja STILL feels great --- it has a bit more "palm swell / belly" in the handle then say my :spyder: Barong but none the less -- it is VERY comforable no matter how/which way I grip it.

And I agree 100% with Grumpy --- out of the 40 / 50 :spyder: that I own -- the Navaja is the slickest opening -- it just GLIDES open almost with no thought but a small flick.

And as a matter of fact --- because of my "girly-man" hand size , the Navaja is the ONLY :spyder: that I own that I can do a " pinky finger flip " to open the knife in a "dagger / REFO " ---- ALL the other :spyder: I own , I have to use my "ring finger" to open them that way.

I've liked EVERY one of Ed's designs that I own --- I LOVE THIS ONE !!!

Now --- if we can just talk Sal into coming out with a 5" or 5 1/2" blade Navajo  :D
