Which lightweight EDC?

#1

Post by dali »

looking for a lightweight everyday carry, considering delica lightweight or pro-grip lightweight, tried the dragonfly, seems a little too small for my hands... police and military looks good but might be too big for EDC?

any other models i should consider?

any pro's/cons for delica and pro-grip respectively? thanks for any input and suggestions.

Hi dali

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum. The Delica is a great knife for EDC (it was the first model I bought). I would also suggest you consider the FRN Native. Smaller than the Police or Military but with great ergonomics and a blade with a more robust tip than the Delica.

dali,
You may want to consider the salsa. Larger that the pictures would make it look. Fits my hand well, I also think the Dragonfly is too small for me. Some of the aluminum colors are being discontinued plus they're not too expensive. I actually carry the Ti at work. I love the feel of it. I've also been carrying a G-10 Native and it's growing very well on me. The blade size is not too long but very useful.

BTW, welcome to the forum. If you stay here long you'll end up with many .

Dali,

I agree with Boxer. The Salsa is a great EDC. Beefier than the Dragonfly, Navigator and Meercat models. I carry a Ti PE and am going to purchase a CE REAL soon.

Welcome to the forum!

My vote is for the plain edged Delica; after purchasing over two dozen "high-end" Spyderco knives...it still is the one in my pocket today. An incredible design, the perfect size and very nice looking. You can even get them in blue, if there any still around.

I started with the FRN PE Delica... after I hit #9 for me, I gave it to a friend, bringing me to 8...

now at 12 to me, 5 as gifts... 5 for xmas this year!

The Salsa model is one of the better ones out there. It's small enough for EDC, big enough to handle most tasks, and unoffensive to most people.

I own a SS Dragonfly PE, meerkat nav-style PE, and 3 salsas(1 for my dad for xmas). Also a good variety of larger ones.

The Delica is good for the delicate tip and light weight... Salsa is good for belly, flat grind, and great lock.

First off, welcome to the forum, dali!!

For a LtWt. , I'd also have to recommend the Salsa. It's a smaller Spydie than what I'm used to, but don't let its' size fool you because it can handle far bigger cutting chores than one would think.

The Salsa is a breeze to use because of the very ergonomical aluminum (or Ti) handle, not to mention the awesome wide blade on this small bug. Another perk is the nested Compression Lock. (check out pic below)

Others that you could consider;

FRN Calypso Jr.
Delica
Cricket
Navigator
Meerkat

You might also consider the Native or the Merlin. Both are, I belive, considered mid-sized Spydies, and I find them a great fit, both in hand and in pocket. I've carried a stainless steel Native for a few years and it is still very light, even with a relatively heavy handle material. The FRN model is positively featherweight. The Merlin is about the same size/weight, but with a curved Hawkbill-style blade.

Another consideration that is important to me is picking a EDC that won't scare people. I carried my new Chinook all day, but it didn't leave my pocket, because I KNOW it would freak out my co-workers. However, Merlin saw a lot of use today, and didn't scare anyone. If this factors in your choice, you probably don't want to go much bigger than a mid. If not, the Millitary is very light for a big knife and seems to have a great reputation (I want one myself!).

In med. size, I recommend the Delica, or the Native. In the large size, the Endura. RKBA!

Howdy Dali! Welcome to Land!

I'd personally pick the Endura or Delica, depending on your local laws. The Endura has a cutting edge of 3 and 7/16ths", while the Delica is right at 3". Go for whichever feels better to you, and the one that suits your tasks best.

Never underestimate the impossible.

I have to second A.Rex's suggestion about the Native. Whenever I want to grab a go-anywhere do-anything knife from the drawer, my FRN Native in CPM440V is usally my choice.

I keep telling myself it's so inexpensive too that it wouldn't be a big deal if I lost it... but man, I'd cry if I lost this knife! lol.

My second favorite EDC is rapidly becoming my Rookie...

Had the SE FRN Endura ATS-55 since friday 1305... love it already.

Used it last night on our porkchops(more like steaks at 1" thick, cooked), and today on boxes... kicks ass.

Trying to guess by hand, but the Millie and Endura seem about the same weight.

only scared one person today, when I got a snack after work, and opened the chips (while waiting for the bus) with my millie.

I say go with the calypso jr. frn. Can't go wrong with vg-10 Just the right size for a lightweight edc.

Just like a certain brand of potato chips, you CAN'T (have) just one, so buy a Delica AND an Endura...They make an EXCELLENT pair.

As long as it's a , you can't go wrong. I carried a Delica pe for EDC for over 8 years and switched to a FRN Native pe several months ago. Either would be an excellent choice. I have a Salsa as well and it would be great as EDC as well, but personally I don't like the way it fits against the back of my pocket seam as well as the others. I have been thinking about getting another Delica since I lost my old one.
