Hi Pekka,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Thanx much for visiting and posting. Your knife was very well received at the IWA show as well. Many compliments.

Hi Simsmac,

Sorry, didn't see the earlier question.

No, not necessarily. It depends on who makes the prototype, We usually pick steels when we begin tooling. Often the steel requires a long lead time for manufacture. On what knife were you seeking info?

Sal answered that on another thread, saying that if it is not S90V it will be another "hifallutin Steel".
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

I really hope we get more models with s90v, not because I know anything about steels, but because there is so much hype around it I would like to try it out for myself.

None in particular, it was just a question that popped into my head while I was browsing this thread. Thanks for the response. :)

Another question that comes to mind is this: what determines where a knife is manufactured? Specifically, I notice an influx of Taiwanese-made models in this thread, and I was wondering what decides whether a knife that uses S30V is produced in Taiwan or the US. I realize that there's probably a cost difference between production in the two countries (I assume Taiwan is cheaper), but why not just manufacture all the S30V knives in the cheaper country?

I know everyone is excited about these knives...but i wish you guys wouldn't quote pictures. I'm about 90% limited to a phone for my internet at the moment (moving) and this thread brings my 3G to its knees :D

Spyderco is really tugging at my wallet with all these outstanding designs. The puuko is particularly beautiful. cpms30v will be perfectly fine for the puuko but I have this dream of a puuko with super blue steel. It would be incredible workin that patina all over the blade. Edge like a laser. Outstanding.

This is quite an intriguing design. Is it a linerlock or a lockback? In the pictures you posted it seems like there are both locking mechanisms in the same knife

A lot of what decides the country of origin is A) capacity and B) capability. The Taiwan manufacturer seems to be very capable and have the capacity to build many of these models right now. I seem to recall Sal saying that the maker of the Sage was the only company that was able and willing to take on the project of building the knife with so many locks.

If you will be able to take a picture of Manbug along with Ladybug than it would be just perfect.
I did one better and shot some video of it, comparing it to my own Ladybug. It'll take me some time before I can post it though. In short, the Manbug indeed has the same dimensions as the Manbug. However, the Manbug's blade is a tiny bit wider and the handle is a bit thicker.

Thanks for watching. Your design is very nice. Unfortunately, it had one of those 'dreaded' red tags indicating that it's still a concept model and/or too early to be published on the interwebs.

I'm 99,9% sure that it's going to be a regular production model. I've talked about the knife with the Spydercrew at the Amsterdam Meet and the IWA show and it was never referred to as a sprint run. And as Deacon indicated, that's a lot of tooling and investment for just a sprint run.

I had felt bad about missing the first one, I had thought of chasing one in the after-market, but all thought of that is GONE.

This one is a LEAP forward....

Spyderco 2011 Prototype – Centofante Memory

#378

Post by Mr Blonde »

This is the last prototype I can show you, the Frank Centofante Memory model. I wasn’t sure if I could show you this model yet, I had to check with the Spydercrew over the weekend at the IWA show in Germany.

Image

Centofante has apparently been very important in the development of Spyderco as a knife manufacturer. Sal told us about how Frank Centofante influenced them in manufacturing quality. Mr. Centofante passed on in 2009 if I recall correctly, and this model will be in dedication to his memory.

Image

The knife is a classic gent´s knife with very refined lines. The handle is blue anodized titanium with a silver twill carbon fiber onlay. The piece is very lightweight and the handle to blade ratio is very close. Even though this model is not intended for left-handed users, I had no trouble opening and closing it left-handed. The action was very smooth. Since my father was a fan of Spyderco Centofante collaborations before he passed on in 2009, this model has somewhat of a double meaning for me and is a must-have in my collection.
