Please bring back the Rock Salt

#1

Post by Linguini3 »

Got that Spydie fever not too long ago and i've been looking real hard for my next purchase

for the most part i'm going to stick to sprints for 2011 and maybe a P'Kal since the fighting style seems quite easy to learn and i still dont have a designated SD knife (though my millie can fill that role for now :D )

during my search i found the beauty of the knife known as the Rock Salt, after reading many many positive reviews and watching countless youtube videos on it, i was hooked

However, after a quick google search all my hopes were shot down... the rock salt has been discontinued and i cant find any online stores that still sell.

so my question is : is Spyderco planning a re-issue of the knife or is it gone for good?

i only wish that my spydie fever had kicked on a year ago :( i wouldnt have missed out on so many awesome knives

p.s. sorry if i'm a little late on the whole rock salt ordeal but like I said, i just start collecting not too long ago

From what I've read, the plan is to re-issue it but in another steel. VG-10, IIRC, but definitely not H-1.

ewww vg 10

not that it's a bad steel but i would much rather have one in h1

well, looks like i'll keep my search up for a rock salt in h1 that isn't ridiculously overpriced

I made the mistake of selling mine a few months ago when I needed some cash.

I'd like to see in something super-tough, maybe M4--kinda negates the "salt" part of the equation, but would maybe bring it closer to the kuhkri it seems to modernize. If your going to make a big chopper, make it out of a chopping steel.

I didn't jump on the H-1 because I was worried about edge retention in heavy chopping tasks. Does VG-10 edge hold up to repeated chopping?

If you're wanting something super tough then M4 would be a great way to go, but it would be second on my list. I plan on starting a whole thread soon to showcase CPM 3v for those who haven't heard of it. Basically it sacrifices some edge retention in exchange for an extreme amount of toughness. Also, 3v has a bit more Chromium than M4 so in theory it should resist corrosion better.

Edit: Of course since the rock salt is made in Japan, using either of these steels would probably be too cost prohibitive. Plus, I doubt the manufacturer in Japan has any experience in working with 3v anyway...

The Rock Salt design isn't a good chopper -- it's too light to be one at its size. It works fine for all sorts of other uses -- batoning, fuzz sticks, whittling tent stakes, food prep of big stuff (Clovisc has posted great shots in past reviews of one taking apart huge salmon), etc. It's a general purpose camp/outdoors knife design, not a chopper.

I'd prefer to see a tool or alloy steel for it instead of VG-10 or other stainless for the new version, but that's just me. H1 is a great choice for a heavy duty knife due to how tough it is, but a nice earned patina is a lovely thing on a blade IMO.

Ewww VG-10? Lol. Ok. Welcome to the forums :)

Buy a H1 one. They sell on eBay for $250-320 these days. A vg10 one is going to be VERY similar minus the rust part. Just don't leave it in the sea.

I agree with a tough tool steel but then it's harder to sell to the public. Mall rats don't like patina :p .

I believe it's coming back as the "Schempp Rock" or something like that, with a FFG and VG-10.

I am a long time knife user. I just started collecting and this is one knife that I must have. For me one of the best looking knives of all time. I have seen some pass on eBay but they were way to much money and then I saw a 2011 shot show vid with the rock salt in it. Any word on a possible release date?

Yep and it's going to be a shock to some. I had to buy one when the street price dropped from $200 to just over $100 and I'm glad I did. The new FFG VG-10 will IMO probably carry a street price well north of $200.

I'm sure you can find one...just gonna pay a ton. And remember its not what something costs its what something is worth.

$300 for a knife you plan on keeping for the rest of your life is really not that bad. Also depends if you are actually going to use it. If it is going to sit on a shelf, then probably not but if you use it most days, than absolutely it is worth $300+.

...mine chops just fine...however I have not attempted to take down a tree larger than a small sapling to make a walking stick. My Forester would chop a little differently as it is significantly heavier.

Yeah sorry bout the vg10 comment, had a bad experience with it before but I have gotten to use some VG-10 knives recently and they've been growing on me. Would love to see the re-issue in any steel (including VG-10) :D

My response was prob a bit harsh too :) . Totally understandable.

VG10 in thick blanks is pretty tough, it's comparable to the N690CO in the Hossom's except it will be thinner and prob not convex ground.

I'm with you tho. A tool steel would keep it cheaper.

this remains the greatest fixed blade i have ever owned or used. it just gets better and better, the more you put it to work!

i can't imagine the number of salmon this knife has cleaned by now -- for myself, my wife, visitors, friends... quite a few!

Just wanted to add a sign of hope on the price of getting one of these cheap. I just bought a NIB one on Ebay for 114 shipped. :D

Wow, you're not joking. That seller must have his head up his a**, since the last two on ebay sold for $400 and $325, respectively. Nice score!
