A quick note about the Ambitious and the other value folders: stealthy, they are not. They sit very high in your pocket and have a thick, chromed clip (polished chrome with a triangle head similar to that of the Military's clip). If you are not supposed to have it at work, you may prefer the extremely deep carry and discrete design of the UKPK clip.

Get a small fixed blade like a swick or spot.

You can get a Kiwi slip-it for under $20 btw. It's a wharncliffe blade, and has really nice ergonomics. I have the stag version (around $30) and it is a very comfortable knife to use, and the wharncliffe blade just bites into whatever you're cutting.

I think the real issue here is that you are suffering from Repetitive Stress Injury caused by repetition of using your thumb to close your knife 600+ times a day. Another knife with a different method of closing will help but you'll be doing that 600+ times a day X's 5 days a week (3000+ reps) also. Maybe alternating three different knives with different actions will help.
Focus is just distraction from distraction, so I take my moderation in moderation.

Get something with a wave and you won't have to use your thumb to open.

that is the thought right there - going to be rotating out knives weekly between 3 to keep the repetition of injury down

Do you think you really need a lock? I'd have thought that unlocking it each time you want to put it away would just slow you down and add an extra strain on the thumb. The lock gives extra security if you are putting a lot of force on the point but that's quite a rare action - and on the SLIPIT a choil would prevent any closure anyway :)

I have the ukpk frm orange (I think it is called rescue). It is very smooth to open and close with no lock.

I made a quick video to show the action of the frn rescue (I think this or any of the frn ukpk will work well for you).

hope you enjoy the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hFAGOhMBWM

Nope i dont really think i NEED a locking knife and that is why i originally was leaning towards a UKPK but...

in the end Janich won with his suggestion of the Ambitious - it arrived today and I dig it

Ill still get a UKPK on down the road but for now its time to field test this

I know a great way to make certain that your thumb will never have even the potential for issue...

*drum roll*

Use an actual box cutter.

*bows*

Thank you! I'll be here all week!

ya i agree with most of the comments above.

I think the para2 would be easy b/c u dont even use ur thumb and u can get it to literally drop when unlocked making a very fast knife to open and close, without "tearing" up fingers.

Someone else said the tenacious or persistance which i think is a great idea too, much cheaper than the para2 and the belly is nice and fat if u like that, this is of course if u want to go with a Micheal Walker liner lock.

Im not going for a non-locking knife, especially if ur working fast, it just increases the chances of something happening, and with the locking knives mentions above, you should be better than a lock back knife...

EDIT: just saw u got the ambitious, good choice and easy on the wallet!!!

Evil D wrote:I wouldn't suggest a slipit unless you're ok with opening it two handed...most of them require too much force to be easy to open with just your thumb.

I would look into a Paramilitary/Para 2 or the Sage 3, maybe even a Manix 2 if the size isn't an issue. All of these can be operated with one hand and are easy on your fingers. I go open/break down/cut up a zillion boxes a day at work so i feel your pain. Right now my go-to knife is a Paramilitary...i love the compression lock. Once it's broke in good, it's a breeze to close.
I don't know anything about :spyder: slipits.... But I definitely agree that the para2 is well worth looking into. The compression lock becomes second nature to close quickly and I cannot imagine being able to close a slipit faster. Also you can learn to flick is open with a middle finger and use your index finger for the lock and avoid the thumb altogether.

AND you'll have a paramilitary2 :D

I have the Persistence and I will say that from playing with it a lot...that the linerlock jimping is pretty aggressive and can be tough on the thumb.

I am going to also suggest the frn ukpk...love mine. Carry it non stop around the house and love it.
