Only 3 tools around the house?

#1

Post by Lord vader »

If you could pick three tools to keep around the house no matter what, what would they be? Which reminds me of a quote from a clint eastwood movie, "WD-40, Vice grips and some duct tape – Any man worth his salt can do half of the household chores with just those three things”. Multi tools are excluded.

Framing hammer, Driver (with bits), and visegrips.

If I could have a fourth, I'd opt for a big shop vac...

That about covers it--if it's non power tools, I'd go with the Klein 12 in 1 screwdriver.

A saw of some sort would be nice too.

I'd say a multi bit screwdriver, vice grips and a hammer...that pretty much covers most of the general tasks. You can pound nails etc, you can get to most screws and deal with most bolts with the vice grips even though you'll chew them up.

When I heard the quote in the movie I thought I would try the challenge of trying to see what repair`s could not be done just using the vise grips, duct tape and WD-40. Screws would definitely be difficult to remove with vise grips.

A hammer.

If I can not fix it with the hammer, I just smash it and it is no longer a problem ;)

Seriously though, I could get ~95% of my stuff done with a Delica or Endura, a hammer, and channel lock pliers.
Thanks,

The Channel lock was my first choice too.

Baling wire and duct tape along with epoxy are supplies, not tools and should be in every house IMO.

It's tough to pick just three! What types of tasks are we talking here, as general as possible? Maybe something like this:

1. I don't even own a multitool, but I'd go with something like a Swisstool or LM Wave for the pliers, knife, saw, screwdrivers, marking capability, and "hammer".

2. Some type of drill (if we're talking just 1 tool no extra bits and no power tools, I'd go with a twist drill with maybe a 1/8" bit)

3. Try square

I also thought about a multimeter, but figured you could get away with touching the back of your hand to the wire or licking the terminal if it's a battery. Also considered a tape measure, but figured you could get away with using the square. If I could have more, I'd want some micro screwdrivers, a good pair of pliers, some good screwdrivers, and a hammer. If I could have a power tool I'd want a cordless screwdriver.

I think that Clint Eastwood movie was Gran Torino. Great movie, by the way.

-A hand axe about 16" handle length (could be used to take down small trees and be used as a knife, and the back can be used as a hammer).

-Channel Locks

-Lots of Paracord or rope of some type.
