anyone replace/improve the pivot on a native?

#1

Post by XavierV »

I had bought one for my girlfriend, but our course she wasn't digging it so I sold it.

Now my buddy is jonesin for one, but when I told him that the pivot was not adjustable...he changed his mind.

I have barely got him yo realize that CRKT are NOT quality knives, so im trying my best to convince him to get a spyderco.

the guys is not the sharpest tool in the shed. He once took his lame CRKT and had a mini sword fight with my SNG completely chipping a blade. if he wasn't a childhood friend, I would have gave him the whooping of a life time. he is also the type that likes to stab at tough materials for ha-has, which is one again why backed out on the native since he knew once the blade acquired play from abuse, there would be no easy way of tightening it.

so my question is....have any replaced the pivot on the native for an adjustable one? is there another pivot that will drop right in?

thats in advance guys,
Xavier

First of all, I have to say I'm not trying to bash your friend.

With that said, if he is planning to "use" a knife like he is planning to do, Spyderco might not be the brand or the premium steel S30V native might not be the type of blade that he should be looking at. He should be looking at something like CS for abusive purpose, and their softer medicore steel choices are better suit your friend's purpose.

Oh bash away, I completely agree.
When i told him the pivot on the native was not adjustable I was like "so its not a knife you plan on stabbing wood with. his reply was "of course i am!"

So I am completely agree. I mean seriously, the jerk had a mini knife fight with my strider and his crkt. EDGE TO EDGE.

However, he "claims he is ready to step up a notch as well as learn what a knife is actually for. I'm trying to get him to see them as what they are, a tool.

His birthday is in a few weeks. I told him I would buy him a cheap knife he can beat the crap of, as long as he gets himself a "serious knife" that he will treat wit respect.

so by all means, bash away. The guy is a moron.

HOWEVER, i am still interested to find out of is anyone has replaced the pivot on the native with someone adjustable.

I dont care if it voids the warranty in the least bit.

Based on your description of your friend, here are the two best recommended Spydercos for him.

http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum2218.php

And most likely you won't find many answers to your question here, as most of the people here don't intentionally run around destroying their knives, as seems to be the case with this individual.

I've never replaced the pivot but I have tightened it. Just take off the pocket clip (so you don't damage it in the next step) and use a bit of force from a hammer to hit the rivet. The same goes for the rest of the rivets if they start loosening. However, be cautious as to how tight you make it. There's no easy way to undo a super tight pivot.

Since you agree that he is a bit of a moron, I will have to get it out:
In his current state, he doesn't deserve a Spyderco!
If he's all about abusing knives and doing dumb crap to them, a Cold Steel might suit him better...

IF you still want to get him a Spyderco, get a Persistence/Tenacious/Resilience, just pick a size.
They're not gonna break the bank and you won't feel as bad if he ends up abusing them in the end. :)
How old is this guy!?
I've heard stories where someone left 2 open knives on the table and their 5 YEAR OLD came and banged the edges against each other...

As far as replacing the pivot on the Native, you're going to need the right kind of tools, the mechanical capabilities to actually do this, and exactly the right kind of parts. If you don't already have such capabilities, don't bother with it. Especially if it's going to a guy who doesn't exactly treat knives good, doing so much work is not worth it... :o
