Spyderco Tanto Concept

#1

Post by Oddwolf »

Okay, so many knife makers do tantos. To my knowledge, Spyderco doesn't! :(

Here's an idea:

There are a few flaws in this design that I notice already, but it's just a concept.

What do you think?

There was a Spyderco lum tanto folder.
I'd like to see your design but with the blade opening a bit further.

Good idea. Maybe I could just redo the whole thing; I made this one a while ago. You think the grind is okay?

I like tantos that have a tiny bit of belly to them (e.g. Microtech Troodon tanto). The thing that I like most about tantos over other knives is how good they are at piercing things that are usually hard to pierce precisely (like those thick, tightly shaped, plastic packages electronics come in). To that end, I would make the tip pointier (sorry, I don't know the proper terms, but basically I'd make the spine longer than the cutting edge of the belly by more).

I gotcha. When I made this, I focused on the secondary point. In a slashing motion, that secondary point would hit first. That's also why I canted it forward.

You're right though. It's not really a true tanto in function, I suppose.

Hmm...that's not a bad point. I never really think of knives as weapons, probably because I carry a gun. People like my brother who are in more restrictive states would probably appreciate it more.

I don't generally think about combat when I design a knife, but the tanto was historically used as a sidearm. Have you seen a SOG Vulcan? I'm thinking that kind of blade shape would give us both what we want.

Get rid of the recurve, make it a little bit longer, full flat ground, make the handles nicer, and I'm there with my credit card.

Straight blade, or concave curve? I knew a flat grind on a tanto would be cool XD

It'd cool if the blade and handle were a mirror image of themselves with the spydie hole as the center of the symmetry.

I think a convex curve is what you want (i.e. going out). I think that makes it a more versatile knife. Not a lot of convex, just a little.

Wait, I'm confused. I thought you wanted to rid the recurve (in regards to the SOG Vulcan).

Great job on the drawing Oddwolf. When I first saw it I thought it looks like a Spydie to me. I agree that the blade would have to come up a bit to enable a truly Tanto since it's mostly used for stabbing and a bit of slashing as well. Also ffg is a must to keep in the Tanto tradition.

Again, great concept drawing.
