So funny story I thought I would tell you guys. I go to the sfo today I have my fiance and daughter with me well we get out of the car and go up to the door. Before my handle touched the door I caught a glimpse of a person I reconized I turned to my fiance and said that's michael janich. She had just enough time to say who is that before he opened the door for us,my daughter and her entered and I kinda stood there with a dumbass look on my face lol and we both kinda sat there looking at eachother lol. So that was over and I went in and purchased my new persian g 10 and my wife was talking to a associate and was like he was all excited about this janich guy and he didn't even say anything,so then she goes you want to meet him before I could say yes, my wife goes ya he wants to he is obssesed with him lol.So she picks up the phone and says her mike you got a couple of mins to talk to someone he comes down and again I. Have nothing to say with a big dumb look on my face lmfao. So I feel like a douche cuz I wanted to be like what do you carry on ur edc and such but I said nothing. My wife says to me in the car on the way home why were you acting like a douche lol I said baby that guy is kinda of a big deal and he would snach the life out of both of us if he wanted to lol. Anyway hope you guys enjoyed this feel free to get a laugh in. I still am

I understand, the first time I went to Blade I did the same thing. Stood around dumbfounded staring at James Keating and Bob Terzuola, plus others. Second year I did better. I think I stood and talked to James Piorek(was the man behind Bladerigger Knives and carry systems) for 45 minutes. I learned a lot talking to him.

I've met Chris Reeve and Ernest Emerson.

But I was too busy picking their brains for info to be star struck. :D

It happened to me with Murray Weidenbaum, an Asst. Secretary of Treasury in one administration and Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisors in another. Now, some of you will think this is funny, but aside from being a CFO I was quite interested if Economics. I went to many lectures, got all the federal reserve publications, The Economist(favorite), WSJ and read many of the classic works in economics.

Anyway I go to an economic presentation given by Weidenbaum to several hundred bankers, CEOs and CFOs and I notice a big mistake in his numbers. Since he said he was giving the same presentation in Washington DC in a few days, when I got back to my office I called his secretary to ask that he be made aware of the error. The next day I pick up my phone and it's Murray W. on the line thanking me for pointing out the problem. My mind blanked and I sounded like an absolute idiot. Duhhhh
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

The first year I went to BLADE I ended up meeting Sal, Eric, Joyce and even Ed Schempp. It was quite intimidating but they were all very nice and knowledgeable and open to questions and conversation. It does get hard to remember all the things you want to talk about when you meet such important people.

The next year I went I wrote down questions so I wouldn't be so dumbfounded and star-struck when I got to the booth. It went a lot better that time.

I am still trying to figure out how you go shopping with your daughter, your fiance and your wife all in the same trip?

I'm sure that when I eventually meet Sal and some other folks I respect like Chris Reeve and Ed Schempp I'll be a little starstruck too. I suppose it's just par for the course considering these people design and produce the knives that end up in our pockets. They become a part of our everyday lives!

Same thing happened to me when I met Jason England. One of the greatest card cheaters in the world. (He demonstrated for pure entertainment of course)

After a lecture, I finally got to meet and shake his hand. I had no idea what to say and just stood there trying to process the fact he was standing right in front of me. All I said was, "I love your work," got his signature on one of my decks, and walked off. What ticked me off was that the previous night, I had plans to show him some of my work but totally froze up when I had the chance. Perhaps one day I'll meet him again. I'm sure I will.

Lucky you though! I hope to meet Michael Janich one day myself. I have a lot of respect for that man.

I went to a dinner with my wife years ago (...she was my girlfriend at the time) at a modeling function she was attending. Anyway, I was chatting with all sorts of beautiful women and generally having a good time. One woman in particular I was hitting it off quite well with (chatting about politics, and such)...it was like talking with an old friend. My GF came back over and sort of got all sheepish and quietly stumbled through her words to tell me that we needed to go to another table to talk with her agent.

We headed over and finished out our evening and she later told me who I was talking to. The woman was the current (at the time) Ms. America...and I had no idea. She just seemed like a pleasant woman who was willing to engage in intelligent conversation.

By contrast, I have met a handful of other people at these functions that IMO were much smaller fish in the sea...and they were arrogant jerks. You never know?
Thanks,
Ken (my real name)

Dear Laplaga:

For a "douche" you seemed like a really nice guy. Thanks for taking the time to visit. It was great to meet you and your fiance/wife and your daughter is adorable. She reminded me a lot of my daughter when she was that age.

Feel free to come back any time. If I'm in the office I'd be happy to chat.

Happy Holidays!

Stay safe,

Mike

I worked for a few years in a gun shop that had interesting visitors at times. The ones I remember vividly are James Lovell, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard and James Earl Jones. They were regular guys enjoying a hobby and not at all intimidating to talk to. Perhaps that's partly from being in my element and my comfort zone at the time but I think they'd be that way most anytime. I also think part of it is gun/knife people overall are more toward the correct end of the spectrum compared to those who abhor guns and knives.

I was thinking about this thread and my imagination wandered... When M. J. got home tonight he probably pointed this thread out to his wife while beaming with pride. And she said "yeah, whatever big shot... You forgot to take the trash out last night and the dog got into it, so get your butt out in the kitchen and clean up the mess right now" and he said "ok"

It happens. Best thing is to realize these people are just that...people, and prone to being either really cool or really not just like any other person is. Getting past that starstruck moment and treating them like people is usually much appreciated. Not to mention you usually get to learn some stuff from people who are amazingly well informed in their fields! Good to know that Mr. Janich is one of those prone to being cool and not one of the other sort. Good for you in getting to spend some time with a guy most willingly pay to talk to!

Ya he was really easy going and just a stand up nice guy. He guessing he would of answered all my questions I. Just couldn't think of any. maybe one day I can afford to take more mbc classes and get to the advanced level so I can actually train under the man himself. I acted so stupid I couldn't even tell him what instructor I've taken some lessons under lol maybe next time.
