Who wants more Chinese-made Spydies? I know I do.
I own just about every Byrd model there is and there is nothing wrong with their value. That said, I make a deliberate effort to avoid Chinese goods where possible. Why? Because I believe that China will be a future combatant. China constantly attempts to hack our computerized infra-structure, steal industrial secrets to the point of 'cloning' entire factories right down to the same instrument settings and has set upon a massive military upgrade of nuclear hardware and delivery systems. It is my firm conviction that every dollar we send their way, will at some point be returned in the form of an EMP warhead and other devices.
I don't blame the average Chinese citizen as they have very little choice in the matter, however, we do. Yes, I am well aware of the economics involved, but haven't we given away enough of our jobs and future to 'second world' nations? I will gladly pay more for a USA, Taiwan, or Japanese product, to avoid hastening our downfall. As a child of the 50's and 60's, I have seen what the US is capable of and the shining future it had, however, I can't help but feel that said future has been bartered away for thirty pieces of silver. Just my opinion.

I really do Not think there is anything wring with Chinese products, and I guess there is no way to stop China. In ten years time they will be the strongest economic player, Leasing the USA and Europe far behind.
I do not think that is much of a problem, btw. Somerset decades ago Japan was the poor Asian country where our goods were mass produced. Japan took of, now they are as Rich as us or even richer and Japanese goods are high quality and expensive, see companies like Sony, Toyota, Hitachi and many others.
Later South Korea was the cheap place where our goods were produced. Now Hyundai, Samsung, and many others are key players on the global market.
China seems to be the communist demon the western civilised countries are afraid of, but without the cheap and still high quality products from China our standard of Living Gould be significantly lower than it is now. If computers, cellphones, electronics in general, clothes or many other goods were US made or European made they would have to be much more expensive, so hardly anyone could afford buying them.
I'd LOVE to see more Chinese made Spydercos. The Kiwi Slipit is really nice, I played with one at IWA this year. Tenacious and Co are really great. give us a Chinese made Chinese folder!!!
And, BTW, Chinese brand Sanrenmu knives are really great value, I guess in some years that will be a respected brand...

Japan, South Korea did not set exchange rate as their Communist Party pleased, but have same regulation as everybody - they play by the rules.
Communists in China for decade keep unnatural exchange rate which make things made in China cheaper as well as things made outside China way more expensive for Chinese - so China are not buying anything except raw materials they do not have and Russian sophisticated weapons nobody else can do but Russians.
Without this crafted exchange rate which several time different then it suppose to be - I am pretty sure that products from China will not be able to compete products made in US simple because US technologies are more proficient.
But because it is much easy to ask someone else to do your job then actually do it yourself - top management in US use China "cheap production" concept as excuse to not to set up and maintain proficient production here.
Thanks, Vassili.

I just got my Tenacious in today. It is a good knife for the money. Not as good as my Enduras or Native or Mariner etc. but good just the same.I feel guilty for buying it in some ways.I lost my last job along with 1,500 other people because of unfair trade practices with China.Textiles went to China. Now Levis are half priced but lower quality.Wal Mart sells them.I miss being able to buy a good pair of Levis (I made/dyed denim) and was esctatic when I found some great condition Levis in a charity store once that was my size.Times change.People like my Spydercos at work but are cheapskates.SOME wont spend $50 or $60 for a knife.Maybe $35. Now I can show people what the knife I recommend to them looks and feels like.I will use the Tenacious for a few months to test the steel and lock.Maybe coworkers will start buying more Spydercos instead of Gerbers made in China.I hate it helps communism but it Sure helps Spyderco.I don't think Sal is planning on downsizing. These knives probably help his employees.Bigger stronger companies stay in business with better pay and benefeits usually.

I am looking forward to the Ambitious.

I went to the "America's Gun Show" in Chantilly VA a few weeks back. My son and I expected to see at least a few Spydies for sale there. It was a large show with around 1000 tables. I saw exactly 15 Spydies displayed for sale - and all of them were used. But there were literally tens of thousands of cheap-a$$ low-grade knockoff knives for sale at virtually every table. Virtually all of these blades were made in Pakistan and China.
I asked one of the vendors who had a small handful of used Spydies why he didn't stock more - noting that they are a U.S. company based in CO. He said that they had raised prices so high that his customers wouldn't pay the premium for the Spyderco name. Instead they want cheap junk that dulls when you look at it sideways.
Really sad.

I usually don't care for China made products but it's inevitable.
The difference between China made products and Spyderco China made products is one thing: Quality Control.
They aren't like those cheap knives you see at shows or the cutlery corner shopping network.
If spyderco doesn't like how they're turning out then the company/factory better improve/correct it.
I've owned the persistence and while I liked it, I did not love the pocket clip.
Gotta have the knife sit a bit better in the pocket for me to carry it.

I only have 1 Chinese knife that I actually carry sometimes and it is the persistence. The knife is great quality for the $$, spyderco defiantly has their QC right for the chinese knives.
I prefer to buy Canadian and US products and I don't mind spending the extra $$ for it. But I well most likely buy the ambitious when it comes out. Spyderco is probably the only company I will buy a chinese knife from.

Pandora's box is open...Buy American when the value of the product merits it, otherwise buy the best knife for your dollar. Dollar for dollar the Tenacious is pretty hard to beat. One benefit of globalization is that it creates a huge disincentive for countries to have conflict with each other when they have so much financially invested in each other. :o
Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

I used to think the same, until i saw the para2, then ordered the recent sprint run, why pay more than 50$ for a good knife i would say to myself, then i got it in the mail and now the list of knives i wanted just changed drastically, all the chinese made and sub 50$ knives have vanished, and a whole new list is created, the para2 is a cut above all of the other knives i own, none of which cost more than 100$. But i would recommend just save for that one 100$ plus spydie, and go for it, you wont be dissapointed with the quality!
Fortunately or unfortunately? Hard do say. I have learned that the opposite of war isn't peace, it's trade. Despite it all, we still continue to improve and grow our Golden factory.wsdavies wrote:Pandora's box is open...Buy American when the value of the product merits it, otherwise buy the best knife for your dollar. Hey Rodd,
I hear you, but also consider market demand. While we can and do have much discussion on this question, which is valid, Americans as well as the rest of the world are highly motivated by inexpensive prices. The Chinese Yuan at 1/5th the US dollar is hard to compete against in a world market.
This is especially true when many countries do not require country of origin to be marked on their imported products.

The great thing about trade is that it's a great equalizer. As China continues to develop and modernize it's standard of living will rise, freedoms will increase and it's workers will demand a higher wage.
At any rate, we live in a global economy measured in shades of grey. A smart business person knows this and crafts a strategy that takes this into account. Obviously Spyderco has done this which in my opinion is commendable. As a fellow Coloradan I appreciate that fact that even the Chinese knives contribute profit to Colorado's economy through Sal's state income tax :D
