S.P.O.T. with dyed/stabilized Maple burl scales

#1

Post by Eighth of Eight »

Here is my personal S.P.O.T. witch, when I purchased it, at once I realized that the factory scales did not agree with my grip. Having been pretty busy with life in general and my customers various projects I have found little time for my own knives. I had it naked in my workbench drawer for maybe 11 months.

So, finally I chose a set of red and black dyed/stabilized Big Leaf Maple burls cales from my selection and began work about four weeks ago, working in between customers knife projects. I decided to get rid of the pins and replace them with some hollow aluminum tubes. I am not partial to lanyards so that was filled in with epoxy. The thumb ramp is quite a lot more comfortable now that it does not cut into my skin.

I pressed a kydex sheath for it and attatched a Spyderco clip for ease of carry. I will likely cut off part of the triangular belt guide on the clip just to lessen it's size. There are a few small scratches on the blade that I will have to buff out still. In the future I may increase the individual finger indents but for now it suits me pretty well.

Pictures are certainly not my specialty but here are a few anyway. ;)

Great job Eight. Like the look of those scales. So what did you put into the largest hole? It sort of looks like amber.

I did the same thing with my G-clip for my Swick 2. I carry it horizontal on my belt and felt the tab was too wide.

Sweet Zach :D That S.P.O.T. is interesting, kind of like a swick with a cricket blade.

Thanks again for the scales on the Mule :)

Nice work Eighth! Do you work in micarta at all on the Swicks?

Thanks you guys for the kind words. AngusW, the cut-out in the handle and the lanyard hole in the steel are both completely filled with epoxy.

The S.P.O.T. has been out of production for a while now. It is much more comfortable to handle now, can't stress that enough. It is a neat little knife Charlie, I have been hoping Spyderco will do a sprint version made in Golden with CPM-S90V or another high caliber steel. The reverse S blade is a bit tricky to sharpen, practice makes perfect I hope.

Monkeywrangler, I have not worked with micarta or G-10 before but I have all the tools for it.

Don't be shy anyone, my e-mail is beginragnarok@hotmail.com.

I know this thread is a little old but I gotta know! What do you do to put the specific finger grooves in the handles? Do you trace around fingers or just eyeball them? I'm working on my first hand made knife and I want to do just that! Also, I'm seriously thinkiing of having you do a knife for me just to say I did. Where do you buy your stabilized wood?
