Poorfish deal!
Legal trouble or just consumers being mad about it? I don't think it's illegal to mark up an item and then put it on sale. Is it a good business practice? I guess it depends on how one looks at it.Blades wrote:Years ago I remember "JCPenny" being in trouble for raising prices then putting the items on sale.
I'm a firm believer in voting with your wallet. If they keep doing it and enough people stop doing business and voice displeasure, then perhaps it will stop.
Either way, I would imagine most people come out better in the end anyways.

It depends on where the business is located. Here in New York, if you advertise something as XX% off you have to be able to show you offered it at the "full" price for a significant portion of the past 90 days or that the full price represents the MSRP of an item you are offering for the first time.Jowens wrote:Legal trouble or just consumers being mad about it? I agree on the voting with your wallet. What Poorfish did would definitely make me take a closer look at things they offered "On Sale", but wouldn't necessarily stop me from buying something I wanted and knew they were selling at the best price around.

I just try to be an educated consumer. Occasionally, this vendor has genuine deals--there was a good run beginning of last summer I think--but, generally speaking, I do better elsewhere. On the high-end stuff, I stick with one primary and two secondary vendors where I pay a bit more, but trust that any issues can be resolved with a minimum of fuss. It's not a good deal if I have to have a bunch of negative emotions and hassle.
The Missouri Attorney General should look into this
Poorfish has offices in Ballwin, Mo., and Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster should look into the company's duplicitous pattern of raising prices whenever it advertises a "sale."
As in other states, the attorney general enforces the state's consumer protection law.
I've bought from Poorfish about a half a dozen times and continued to do business with them. But my most recent experiences were not good:
-- I ordered a Spyderco and called to ask what was the best coupon to use. The next day, Poorfish came out with a better coupon. It had not yet shipped my knife. I called to ask if I could get the better price and was told, "There is no one here who can authorize that."
I didn't get my knife for another week, despite living near to this dealer.
My bad luck? Maybe. But most merchants would honor the latest coupon because, prior to shipping, a customer can simply cancel and reorder at the lower price.
I have friends who operate small businesses, I know what they are up against in this economy, and I try not to be a jerk with merchants. I let it go and paid the higher price.
-- Recently, I ordered Delica G10. Total price was $85 shipped. Not bad compared with the rising prices elsewhere.
Poorfish never sent a tracking number and more than a week went by without any word from Poorfish. Finally, it sent an email saying the shipper -- I believe USPS -- had "again" damaged the knife beyond repair and Poorfish was issuing a refund, which they promptly did.
I messaged asking for more information about the "again," but never got a response. So I let it go.
My bad luck again, I guess. Can't blame Poorfish for shipping damage. Still, the lack of communication meant I had to pay more elsewhere because prices were rising for this discontinued Spydie.
I shopped at Poorfish because of the prices. But the poor communication and phony sales should be red flags for any potential buyer.
I am reporting this here in the hopes that Poorfish will see this and get its act together. It can do better -- and it has in the past.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Even though it's deceiving, I don't think it's illegal. Just don't buy from them and give them a bad rating so others will be forewarned.flash900 wrote:Poorfish has offices in Ballwin, Mo., and Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster should look into the company's duplicitous pattern of raising prices whenever it advertises a "sale."
My two cents worth . . . I like 'Caveat Emptor' - let the buyer beware. Generally, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. With Poorfish (and others of their ilk), first time, forgive, second time, 'get the full facts.' No third chances for me. I'm onto another vendor. It's just not worth the hassle. To save a few bucks and have that kind of grief is not what I need.flash900 wrote: . . . I shopped at Poorfish because of the prices. Questions...
I have to ask some questions:
Has anyone actually contacted Poorfish?
Do you know the item(s) were not included in a previous sale before the 25% sale?
What is their 'standard' price?
Was the sale 25% off the MSRP?
Are we piling on?
I don't want another 'bad grind' type of thread. :)
Just to be clear, I have purchased several Spyderco knives from Poorfish on eBay. Most recently a Warrior :spyder: for a fantastic price. :D

I ordered one of those $99.99 Gayle Bradleys on Thursday (despite telling myself I was done buying knives for the year :rolleyes :) , and they sent me a UPS tracking number today.
For those who said the item was lost or damaged by USPS, did they ever send a tracking number? If not, I suspect it was never shipped.
I've ordered one or two other times from Poorfish through eBay and didn't have any trouble. It's probably safer through eBay/Paypal, since Poorfish has to deal with them instead of just you, and they risk bad feedback.

Yeah, I received a UPS tracking number this morning for my order as well.phaust wrote:I ordered one of those $99.99 Gayle Bradleys on Thursday (despite telling myself I was done buying knives for the year :rolleyes :) , and they sent me a UPS tracking number today.

It stinks that some have gotten bad service. Very unfortunate and hopefully it is something that can be cleaned up in the future.
I too ordered a G-10 Delica and received the same treatment that Flash900 had.
Poorfish never sent a tracking number and more than a week went by without any word from Poorfish. Finally, it sent an email saying the shipper -- I believe USPS -- had "again" damaged the knife beyond repair and Poorfish was issuing a refund, which they promptly did.
Let the buyer beware is good advice.

I received a tracking number as well. I just have to see what all the hubbub is over the GB. I mean, there is no way that this knife can be that good since it was made in Taiwan. At this price I just had to have one sent.phaust wrote:I ordered one of those $99.99 Gayle Bradleys on Thursday (despite telling myself I was done buying knives for the year :rolleyes :) , and they sent me a UPS tracking number today.
Poorfish has now set its prices back to its pre-sale levels. It's one thing to raise your prices (every business owner has to at some point), but to raise them the day before the sale and lower them after the sale shows me that their 25% off sale was only a trick to get people to come to their site. Now I know not to pay attention to their advertisements in the future.
If two of us had the same experience with the G10 Delica, could it have been the same G10 Delica?itora wrote:I too ordered a G-10 Delica and received the same treatment that Flash900 had.

As far as Spyderco is concerned, Made in Taiwan = unbelievable quality, amazing workmanship, and incredible fit & finish! You'll understand the hubbub when you get it! :Dsovereign wrote:I received a tracking number as well. I just have to see what all the hubbub is over the GB. Indeed, the Gayle Bradley is one of the best knife Spyderco has ever produced. IMO of better fit and finish than the mighty Sage! Did I mention the CPM M4 steel?gbelleh wrote:As far as Spyderco is concerned, Made in Taiwan = unbelievable quality, amazing workmanship, and incredible fit & finish! This is too much of a coincidence.itora wrote:I too ordered a G-10 Delica and received the same treatment that Flash900 had.

I wonder who ended up with our G10 Delica.
