Dyad Jr. experiences?

#1

Post by feed_the_animals »

I'm excited about the blue-grey Dyad Jr. sprint pictured in 2011 cat. Wondering if owners of previous Dyad Jrs would mind commenting on how the knife feels and behaves in hand? Pictures would be fun too, of course. Thanks in advance.

It's a small knife with no clip. It's suitable for light use, but not really a work knife. Its got a wicked splinter picker tip on the pe blade. The ergos are okay for what it is, but not great by spydie standards. I see it as more of a gents knife.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

My junior is the micarta scaled one with a clip. Nice knife unique & sturdy, up for a fair use but not silly hard. Like araneae said, gent's, which is great as we are all gentlemen here. :) Ergos are better when using the Spydie edge blade. A beaut piece of work.
The new one (I have not seen catalouge) does it have a clip, what blade steel, handle, made where ? pant pant.

I never owned a Dyad and always wanted to try one. Seeing the blue one in the 2011 catalog made me happy.

The Micarta C39 is one of my favorites. I keep one clipped to the watch pocket of my jeans almost all the time, and I reach for it frequently. I actually use it more than my C44 Dyad. The FRN version I'm less fond of, mostly due to the by-pass lock. The micarta version doesn't use the by-pass, and on the versions that do, I'm forever trying to unlock the blade with the wrong lock realease. I'll definitely have to pick up one of the new ones when they hit the streets.

Does it seem that the weight 42g (1.5 oz) mentioned in the catalog is correct?
Are the blades 2mm thick?

Interesting...

Yes, the weight of 42 g should be correct. The original C36 Dayd jr. Lightweight has the same weight and the blade thickness was 2mm too.

I'm not familiar with the bypass lock's function. it looked like a backlock to me. would someone mind explaining the bypass lock to me? TIA

The Bypass lock is a double lockback, but the lockbars overlap each other. As you can see in this photo, the C44 at the top has the by-pass lock, the blades are unlocked by the release farthest from the blade. The micarta C39 on the bottom doesn't use the by-pass lock, the blades are unlocked by the release closest to the blade.

I have wondered why about the by pass lock not being used on the micarta junior Dyad. Any ideas ?
Like Yab, most folk who handle my C44 just don't get on with the bypass.
Doesn't worry me though, just interested to know why the two styles of lock on Dyad's.

I have had the mini for 15ish years and find it to be more of a medium Duty knife. I remember cutting the ends off of 20 firehoses with it about 8 yers ago. I just sharpened the serrated edge last week. Great knive.

I love Dyads full stop, I have them all..........the Juniors in Micarta are great but then so are the FRN's sans clips.........the Micro's started me off down this particular path.

I'd LOVE to see the large Dyad made again irrespective of cost, its a masterpiece Utility knife to my mind............. ;)

BUT I'll buy ANY new ones made no matter the size.........and I still snaffle any of the older models as I find them!

Your not alone, I've been searching for a C44 for some time now... seems like Brain must have been buying them all up!

I believe the micarta C39 was the first of the family. The short lockbars provide less leverage, making it more difficult to release the blades. The by-pass lock system was designed to overcome this, and was used on all the later models.

It's a theory, anyway. ;)
