Taking care of zdp-189

Anything I need to do different than a regular knife? Keep it oiled, clean and sharp. I heard you just have to watch it for rust.

To some extent you have to "watch for rust" with pretty much any good blade steel except H-1. ZDP-189 is less rust resistant than VG-10 or S30V, but still rust resistant enough to be considered stainless steel. Biggest thing to remember is never let it get really dull, it's much easier to keep sharp than to get sharp.

i use silicone spray on mine and wipe it off good before putting it away for awhile. used every day just keep it clean and dry and it should do fine unless you are in a wet enviroment then maybe a little silicone spray more often. if your using it for food prep try cooking oil instead of silicone spray. for storage i use the same stuff i use on guns which is break free, a silicone spray with ptfe (teflon) which hasnt let any of my blued steel guns rust, ever.

Don't use vegetable oil; it goes rancid. Use a food-grade mineral oil instead. (Or one of the other food-safe rust inhibitors out there.)

I'm convinced that all of the negative stories I heard about ZDP were all made up. I've heard many different people talk about chipping, impossible to sharpen, and not corrosion resistant.

I've had an EDC in ZDP for 6 months now, and have experienced none of these. It sharpens like any other high quality stainless, no chips yet (I've gotten 154cm, S30V, and VG10 to chip, but no luck with the ZDP), and it's stayed rust free in situations that have even made my VG10 get a little rust. I'm sure it's not as stainless as some steels, but rust does not seem to be a problem like people say.

All good to here. I use CLP on my other knives and guns and I don't do food stuff with my EDC but I didn't think of mineral oil too.

I have read bad, good, and great things about ZDP. I think it will a great EDC for me.

I was thinking a 30 degree edge With a 3000 grit polished edge (15 per side). Anyone have problems holding an edge at that angle?

people, including myself, like to keep the ZDP around 20 inclusive degree, so 30 is over kill IMO

I don't understand. I was doing a 30 degree inclusive. ( 15 per side). Your saying 20 degree inclusive (10 per side) or 40 degrees inclusive (20 per side)? A 20 degree inclusive would be over kill. Well, really a 30 degree is over kill but its ZDP right!! Overkill is its middle name. :p

I actually posted that I had my ZDP endura at 24 degrees inclusive and Sal told me to start sharpening at 30 degrees on the SM. So I microbeveled at 30 degrees and it's what I do now. I don't think that there's any loss of cutting performance.
