IMO, the MT01 in 52100 has been the sleeper of this series, probably because it was the first one in the series. It's a fabulous blade. Sharpens up very well and pretty quickly, holds an edge very nicely. It's not stainless, but that's not a problem.
The Mastiff wrote:Donut, You probably aren't missing anything. By comparing the chemistry composition to some of the current highly alloyed super steels this one looks sort of pedestrian. On top of that it's an ingot steel, and not even a powder process.

Nevertheless it's a really great steel for guys like me that like really sharp, low angle edges. It's clean, consistent, and if you look around you will find it on some very expensive Japanese chefs knives for professional use.

It's wear resistance won't be anything like S90V, or CPM M4 for that matter. In fact it's closer to the 52100 mule than the S90V one. If you like 52100, W2, O-1 or O-2, and even 1095 you should like this.

No steel is for everybody though. Because I really think highly of it doesn't mean squat to the next guy. I don't need corrosion resistant stainless steels. Others like them. I do like knives that take a really good edge, and hold it at a high level until it's time to sharpen. I'm very rarely far from a diafold sharpener so a quick touchup to keep my knife sharp enough to slice atoms doesn't present a problem.

I always have S90V ( or M4, S110V, S125V, etc.) for when I need it.

The biggest thing to me is having a good, familiar design to use, learn and play with rather than having to buy an imported Japanese style knife to be able to play with this expensive Hitachi premium steel and set the bevels how I like them.

It is just steel though. like all the other mules. :)

Two on the way. One's going to end up as another paring knife for the kitchen. I hope I'm up for it because it's going to need some major reshaping. :) Can't wait!

Cannot get the mule to ship to NY

#44

Post by Ildbjorn »

Hi folks, this is my first post!
I have been trying to place my order for the mule, but keep getting the message that my order is cancelled because I want it shipped to NY state! I have ordered other mules in the past ( all shipped to NY State with no problems as they fall within the category of fixed blade smaller than 4 inches in lenght, as specified okay for shipping to NY State by Spyderco. Is this a web page error?

Please correct it so I can finalize my order!

I seem to remember this error popping up on the Damascus mule as well. You could always try calling in your order if they don't get it fixed soon.

Phone them - there's an 800 # under "contact us" on the webpage. The VM pick is 4. If you wait till Tech Support gets back to you, there's a chance they'll be sold out.

I'm still curious about what the HT will be, but decided to order one anyway. If Japanese knife makers value it, it must be for a reason, probably those stated in previous replies. Looking forward to the Super Blue :)

Definitely a fair question, but Spyderco has generally been willing to run steel at higher Rc levels than other manufacturers. I don't think we'll be disappointed. :spyder:

Got mine coming. Ordered at 10am Spydie time and got my shipping notice 3 hours later. Can't wait.

I'm surprised to see that there are still 200 available. I don't think the've put the second batch up yet. I would have thought that it would be selling faster.

Hi Charlie,

They're running about 62. 61.5 on the low side 63 on the high side.

So, I picked my Mule 8 a little while ago and I'm amazed by this Mule. First it was kind of neat that the blade was wrapped in brown paper from Japan. I wish my Japanese was good enough to read the writing :o

I am also amazed by the finish of the steel. It is so reflective it looks like chrome. And, for some reason the blade feel lighter than the other Mules which I know is not possible.

I can't wait to use this steel :)
