Ed Schempp Balance Video
Ed Schempp Balance Video
Even though the Balance is a very nice little "gentleman's folder," anyone who has been on this forum for a bit of time just knew that I was going to get one and do something martial with it  . I am a huge fan of Ed's work.
In this case, after speaking with Ed about this knife, I felt it would work well with some of the small scale, quick motions used in Albo Kali Silat with very small blades, ring knives, and in advanced empty hand applications. Ed sent me a Balance and told me to play with it and here is what happened:

Thanks Jon
Thanks for the demonstration. The small circle technique works well with this small knife. It is a good demonstration of the knifes cutting ability. Thanks for applying your skills to this knife...Take care...Ed
Not a karambit
Actually, this is used quite a bit differently than a karambit. For one thing, a karambit blade, if held in standard fighting "reverse" grip, would be projecting from the bottom, rather than top, of my fist. The techniques utilized here are small/tight motions, and are more akin to "ring knife" techniques or the empty hand breaks/dislocations that look so flowery in some of the Indonesian or Filipino "dances." The three dimensional rotation of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist provide the "spiral" type power generation that powers these cuts, and no ring is necessary. The damage to the target was pretty extensive for such a small blade. For more on power generation methodology, check out the "Power Generation" video on the Albo Kali Silat website. I covered power generation in some depth in a seminar this past weekend and the students, some of whom were very senior ranks in multiple arts, were amazed at how much power the spiral and whip methodologies could yield.ffbeerd wrote:Thanks for posting the video, very interesting!
From my (limited) perspective, it looks like you are using it like one would a karambit. If so, do you feel the lack of a ring on the Balance would prevent you from having the leverage necessary to perform strong cuts?
