Delica ZDP-189 "WOW"

WOW, WOW, and WOW!!!
I have a few Spyderco's but just never got one in the ZDP-189 steel. I ended up getting a new Delica in the zdp steel and this thing is amazingly sharp. I just got it in the mail today and it is the sharpest Spyderco i have seen, (right out of the box).

For that size knife, I would want an FFG blade. You're not going to doing any hard cutting with a small knife.Still, awesome knife. Maybe a regrind is indicated.

Why are you doing this to me? My dealer just today told me he has a sale on these for eighty-some bucks - now you post some pics... and it's a cool color, too! Well, seriously, enjoy your new knife :) Maybe I'll join you and see how it feels.

- best wishes, Jazz.

I almost freaked out when the reflection on that first picture looked like your Delica was FFG ZDP. :o

Congrats on the sweet knife. :)

I thought they were moving to full flat grinds on the zdp?

You cant go wrong with any of those. I have the Delica ffg in blue and the Endura ffg in gray and the blue is just amazing. I like the blue so much that i ordered the blue Endura ffg. The Stretch is my favorite EDC, (at least for now) so i ordered a SE Stretch FRN and the blue ZDP-189 Stretch is next on my shopping list.
(The Blue FFG is just a Beautiful knife)

After EDC'ing Calys and Sages I went back to the ZDP Delica. FFG is nice but I can't say as I notice any difference in routine use. This is a great knife ergonomically, too, at least for my small hands.

That's the conclusion i've come to. I just don't cut enough "FFG mandated" stuff for it to make a difference, and since i use a clamp to sharpen, i've gotten to where i prefer a saber grind.

Aren't those Delicas nice. I'm only using my 2 vg-10 variants now but have an SE and PE ZDP pair NIB in reserve :D .

Theres a reason they've been sold by Spyderco for so long.....

Maybe someone will indulge my newbie question... What are the advantages of a FFG vs a saber grind when it comes to functionality? What particular instance would be "FFG mandated?" Thanks! :)

Selling and buying is not allowed on this forum Bada61265, for good reason from what I've experienced. The forum would not be so friendly otherwise.

Racer88, Saber grind Delica has a stronger tip than the FFG and is a more robust knife for heavier use. My Saber grind grind Delica is probably the most used of all of mine, performs fine and has been touched up quite a few times. ZDP is great and keeps an edge for a long time, VG-10 is also extremely nice. VG-10 also is easy to sharpen. I keep my used ZDP blades ( Walker, Stretch) touched up to avoid a long sharpening experience. It's easier for me if you keep all of your knives touched up, Sharpmaker works very well for that.

If you use a clamping device to reprofile and sharpen, the saber grind gives you a flat and square place to mount the blade clamp.

Both in VG-10 are great. The FFG is a beautiful slicer, the saber ground a more versatile user.

Full flat grind blades are thinner, and have an easier transition to the spine of the blade...like a very thin V shape. The saber grind has that abrupt change from a v shape to the squared off l l shape at the top of the blade. Example, if you cut a thick slice off an apple, the FFG blade will have less tendency to split the apple and will cut all the way through, whereas the saber will eventually split the apple because the blade is thicker. Basically, FFG is a better slicing blade than a saber grind, but i do very little slicing and i don't mind splitting my apples. It's a fair compromise for me to have that flat/square section at the top of the blade to make sharpening easier for me on my Lansky.
