Urggg, those blasted FRN sheath

#1

Post by jzmtl »

A while ago I discovered my rock salt had gone dull mysteriously, even thou I never used it. I thought I just forgot that I did, sharpened it and never thought much of it.

Then few weeks ago my kabar BK11 did the same thing, and I investigated, finally finding out it's because of the injection molded sheath. The glass fiber in FRN would dull the edge instantly on contact.

This brought me back to rock salt. I took it out, looked under light and made sure there's no damage whatsoever to the edge, then inserted and drew from sheath a few times, and looked again. And there it is, the dreaded reflection off edge.

This friggin blows, no point in putting a sharp edge on it since it'll dull within 5 seconds. I intended to use this knife, but now looks like I'll have to get rid of it. :(

I quite like the FRN sheath on my Aqua... aside from that issue. The centimeter of plain edge at the tip of my SE is just about uselessly dull almost every time I draw it.

That sucks. I wonder that's why my Izula gets so dull so quickly after I sharpen it.

I wouldn't get rid of the knife. Just try and get a custom sheath made for it. There should be a number of people who do that on Bladeforums.

I don't think they are FRN, but I know what you are talking about.

There are a couple of sheath makers on this and other forums (Mike Sastre comes to mind) who can hook you up with some new Kydex.

Spyderco catalog says it is. You can also tell if you lightly drag you teeth across the surface, you can feel the grittyness of the glass fiber inside, whereas other thermal plastics (i.e. kydex) doesn't.

I'll see how much a kydex sheath cost, maybe get one if it's not too expensive.
