My wife and I talked about it, and we suspect it may be some family members who have a grudge against us. Or simply some drooling idiots whom I can't figure out why they'd do something like this.
That sounds like a good idea.
I hope everything turns out for good. :)

it's common here, really sick people steal the brass and copper letters from gravestones and sell them as scrap metal, in some bad neighbourhoods they even take off telephone poles and basically everything they can take apart.

Most likely drooling idiots. Forget about a family member having a grudge. (Family member who has downright hatred for you and your wife, that would be a different story.)
Perhaps a solution where if someone messed with the replacement headstone, removing it would trigger a cloud of green dye that doesn't wash off. At least then you might be able to check if anyone has been marked.
Honestly, a pressure device that triggers a cloud of pepper-spray would be better. But then you'd get sued by some punk claiming he was just walking along and accidently bumped into the marker. Let's not help the lawyers afford a better vacation at your expense.

Very sorry to hear about this JimD and I too am at a loss for words.

Jim, i read this awhile back but i just don't know what to say. I can't even imagine losing a child and then to have this happen. i sincerly hope that whoever did this gets to spend some quality time with some of your more notorious clients at your work.

jim,
i am so sorry for your loss and the pain that you and your wife have had to endure.
it's sad that there are people in this world who have no morals and would do such a thing.
i am loosing faith myself, as just this morning i went by my parents grave and discovered that the flowers my wife just arranged and placed on their headstone had been stolen.
i hope there is some good that can come from this for you.
later,

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, even if it is wrong.
We really suspect it was one of my wife's @$$hole family members. One of them, in particular, is what I consider to be a lower-functioning form of fecal matter that I'd hesitate to dirty a shovel with by scraping him off the road.
I'm in a bit of a "mood" of late. Seems quite a number of things are getting to me. Some depression has set in, but I'm battling it off as best I can.
Too much crap to go into detail here, it would take quite a while.
Thanks for the support/prayers.

There was a guy on the news a week or so ago who got busted stealing metal grave markers and cashing them in for scrap metal money. What gets me is, why would the scrap guy even take something like that? That's pretty **** shady.
