Custom phoenix scales

Does anybody know someone who could make these? They are not really that big, so it might be tricky, I dont know..... but this knife is too pretty to not have something cool on it. Anyone?

Am sure there are dozens of knife makers and customizers who could do that for you. I suspect difficulty would depend on the material you want used.

FWIW, and in case you have never seen it, here's the Howard Viele/Liong Mah custom the Phoenix was derived from.

Thanks man. I had never seen that...in fact when I first clicked the link I thought you accidentally posted a link to a Spyderco Phoenix. It would be really neat to see an image of the Spyderco Phoenix and that "original" side by side...they are really not that similar, but at first glance it appears that they are.

i had one that was done by Brad IIRC in carbon fiber but i sold it. i have some material that i have been wanting to make new scales for another phoenix but i havent gotten around to it yet :o .

Great idea, I was thinking about wood scales that are larger than the originals. I love the BB lock, Ti frame and blade shape, but I'm not a big fan of metal handles and the white scales don't contrast enough with the frame.

i jsut dont thing i have the time for such things but sure will be cool to see when finished

i know if i was to do it i would likly opt for ironwood and make the Ti blue

I had been pondering getting the Ti anodized blue as well. The current white scales might look nice on that.

Custom scales are very cool and possible. In fact, as you have noticed quite a few people on this forum can do them!

The only disconcerting statement I noticed was the "something cool" referring to the factory cream Micarta not being up to snuff. No offense but Micarta is a product that most custom knife makers swim in.

Sure it feels like plastic but it's not. Titanium and Carbon Fiber have had a TON of fame due to various applications where they shine (like auto sports). Just because those are used for Formula 1 doesn't mean they are better than G10 or wood on a folding knife.

Still, post those pics when you get it done please! Sounds like a very fun project :) . The last CF Phoenix done by Brad was amazing.

I understand that, but any material, when left with burn marks and grinding wheels abrasion around the corners doesnt look "cool"

so maybe ill just get some white micarta scales finished properly, then that would look cool!!!

little vsande paper and a buffer would finish that need

600 1200 and 2000 grit eaasy to find and so far as a bufffer well thats a bit tricker

Just to quench my morbid curiosity have you contacted Spyderco directly yet? It sounds like the Titanium was scratched to ****. You can't fix that with some new scales.

I agree - if the scales are stained then a light, abrasive polish and some careful buffing should remove the marks :) Might not even need to use the sandpaper but if you do then that will definitely take the stained layer away.

Then again, if it was me I would send it back to the trader if you're not happy and get a replacement. Most traders work hard to look after their customers and it sounds like there should be knives without the smudges on the micarta. :)
