Are folks going to use this Mt-07 Damascus mule?

#1

Post by dbcad »

After looking into it a little bit I prefer the term Damascened. True Damascus is ancient, and the details of it's making seem scarce. The ore used to make seems very specific(Wootz steel). Thinking the description has changed and gotten a little fuzzy over the years. I'm leaning towards the academic.

The Mule is beautiful though, and sharp :D I bought 2. One is getting a set of Halpern scales hopefully arriving tomorrow and the other might get a more priviledged dressing for the handle.

I'll see this weekend how the Damascened outer layers behave when confronted with making some small kindling from hickory logs.
Then it will play in the kitchen for a while.

I know vg-10 is a terrific steel and far superior to anything ancient and have used it quite a bit, just curious how the D.P.S.15 damascus coating reacts to what I do and how it will enhance the core. What does D.P.S 15 stand for

Anticipation :D

I'm going to guess it means Damascus Pattern Steel, 15 layers.

Could be Damascus Pattern-Suminagashi, in which case I would hope a DPM for Mokume comes out.

I've used mine to whittle a bit, chop onions and carrots, sliced an orange, cut up a box, and opened a clamshell pack. It's great. The blade shape is pretty nifty, it's my first mule. So far I only have the handle wrapped pseudo-tsukamaki style.

This weekend I'm gonna make some chicken from scratch with mine. We'll see how she carves up a bird. I'm guessing easily.....

No, most of Mules will sit. A few guys put them through the paces, but more of a novelty collector thing to most including me.

This is the only Mule that really looks different from the others so it will get some special attention and be an elegant user. The second one I bought will get sold at some point to help defray the cost of the one I'll keep and use.

Mine will get nice handles, but will be used. I may sell one to offset the cost, after I put some scales on it and make a sheath.

I wont buy a knife if Im not going to use it. This is why I didnt get a 25th Delica. I could not bear to use that beauty, so I didnt buy one (not to mention saved myself some buck$). Of course, Im a light/medium user anyway, so I dont usually beat my knives up.

Looking at the layering at the tang I see about 2/3 layered material vs 1/3 core. Don't think the layered materials are there for no other reason than looking good. Have to try it and see :D

If I had to venture a guess, I would say that approx. 90% will not be used.

This knife is a user :D It is my first Mule as it probably is for many others and I love it. The blank is designed to use.

Put a set of Halpern LE scales on one of mine and love the way the blade feels and cuts. Everyone does what they want, but this knife is made to use and cut. The blade guards are very nice in the absence of choils. This blade was designed to use :D

I only took the bark of off a few seasoned hickory logs and then diced an onion and bell pepper. The knife doesn't need a touch up yet. VG-10 is good stuff.

With the Halpern scales it has a very solid feel. In use this knife comes alive :D

My current expectation is to use one as a Mule and keep the other unused and naked in the box for possible future whatever.

It's not me, but I happen to know that one of those listings was to claim the title holder of the first ever Damascus Mule on e-bay. He is a clown like that.

I plan to use my new mule, but as a dress knife like others mentioned. Even, "naked", it's already got a lot of attention from my friends.
