Paramillitary questions

#1

Post by JEFF B »

Is the compression lock "sticky" by nature. I scored one at the Easton show over the weekend. Its not very smooth, and the lock sticks. I dont own any other compression lock spydies,so i have nothing to compare it to. I'm guessing it will get smoother with time. I tried the pencil lead trick, and it didn't do much.Other than that i love knife.I wanted a Millitary, but the Para is a perfect size. I paid 120,then when i got home i looked online and saw thats about what there going for. I thought i got a deal, but maybe not? I don't order online, and i've never seen one in stores,so oh well. Thanks for any input.

I've got a feeling there have been similar reports - or rather that the compression lock has very little clearance and needs pushing firmly to release the blade. Someone else might have more specific information :)
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

So far, all my experience with the compression locks shows that you need a full push to clear the lock from the tang.

My Superhawk is also a bit sticky.

My Para is not sticky at all, I have a few spares and neither are they. I hold it in one hand and press the lock and the blade falls open. To close I do the same thing and it drops closed.

I've got a few versions of both the Spyderco Military and Para-Military, and on some the lock sticks a bit on release while others don't.

I also have liner locks and frame locks on other brands of knives where some stick a bit while others don't.

Why the difference, I'm not sure. I just accept them for what they are and put them to good use.

Hope that helps.

I have five Paras and each vary. One has very little resistance and disengages very easily. Another requires a little effort and feels a little rough as the lock is released and another is so stiff that you hear a snap sound as you press to release the lock. My take is that it varies from knife to knife. I plan on taking the Para apart and taking a Dremel tool to the back area of the blade just a hair where the compression lock makes contact to smooth the disengagement. I've done this on a Chinese Lum that was very sticky. Now it's real smooth and no vertical play. The key is to do a little at a time and check the results.

Keep in mind that taking apart your knife may void your warranty. If you're not up to doing this, you can always send the knife back to Spyderco and they should make it right.

I have 2 paramilitaries; a d2 and a black bladed digicam. The d2 lock is tight and more difficult to disengage. The digicam lock is easy to disengage and the lock bar doesn't seem to engage the lock face with much friction. The digicam has vertical blade play and the d2 doesn't, I'd rather have the the tighter lock knife with no blade play. The tighter knife will eventually wear in and loosen up. The loose knife will always be loose.

The one I got a few years ago, I got online, NIB, for about $90.
When I won the auction, I e-mailed the guy to ask if he had any others to sell me at the winning price, and he lamented that he erred in letting this one go at that price as it was, so the answer was "NO!" :D
